Volleyball Extends Win Streak To Six Matches; Defeats Martin Luther and UW-Superior

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team extended their win streak to six matches as they defeated Marin Luther College (MInn.) and UW-Superior on Saturday during the UWL Invitational.

UW-La Crosse 3, Martin Luther College 1 (25-11, 21-25, 25-17, 25-14)
  • The Eagles took control early in the first set as they built a 14-5 lead and never trailed. UWL took its largest led of the set at 23-9 as they hit .450 as a team.
  • UWL scored six of the first seven points and took a 9-4 lead before the Knights battled back to tie it 11-11.  The Eagles quickly scored four straight but Martin Luther would eventually take an 18-17 lead on a kill by Greta Nolte. With the score tied at 20, the Knights would score four of the final five points to win the second set 25-21.
  • Martin Luther continued their scoring as they recorded the first four points of the third set before UWL then went on a 11-4 run to lead 11-7. A Nolte kill would even the score (16-16) for the Knights; however, UWL closed the third set on a 9-1 run to win set three 25-17.
  • It was all UWL in the fourth set as they scored the first four points and built an 18-9 lead midway through. After Martin Luther score three straight, UWL scored the next five to lead 23-12. Reese Yocum would record the final two points for the Eagles with back-to-back kills to give UWL a 25-14 win.

  • Yocum led the Eagles with 10 kills while Maddy Wilson added eight kills.
  • Grace Nommensen and Kayla Sexton each added six kills. Sexton also recorded nine digs while Nommensen finished with six digs.
  • Megan Lund recorded another double-double for the Eagles as she finished with 22 assists and 12 digs.
  • Kailyn Kurth finished with 15 assists to go along with a team high six service aces and five digs.
  • Kennedy Myers tied Lund for team lead in digs with 12.

UW-La Crosse 3, UW-Superior 1 (25-20, 13-25, 25-16, 25-19)
  • UWL opened the first set by scoring six of the first seven points before UW-Superior scored 11 of the next 14 to lead 12-9. UWL battled back to take an 18-15 lead after trailing 14-11. A Kurth service ace would put UWL up 22-18 while a kill by Sexton put the Eagles up 23-19. After a UW-Superior service error, Nommensen recorded a kill to seal the set one win 25-20.
  • It was all UW-Superior in the second set as they jumped out to a 14-5 lead and never trailed. UWL would not get closer than nine the rest of the set as UW-Superior won 25-13.
  • After UW-Superior tied set three at 6-6, UWL slowly pulled away as they built a 20-11 lead and did not let the Yellow Jackets closer than six.
  • The Yellow Jackets used a 5-0 run early in the fourth set to lead 9-6. After UW-Superior took a 14-13 lead, UWL scored eight of the next 10 points to give the Eagles a 21-16 lead. The Yellow Jacket cut their deficit to 23-19 but back-to-back kills by Yocum and Wilson would secure the win for the Eagles 25-19.

  • Sexton finished with a double-double to lead the Eagles with 13 kills and 10 digs.
  • Yocum added nine kills while Wilson had seven kills.
  • Lund led the Eagles with 25 assists to go along with 10 digs while Kurth added 14 assists and three service aces. 
  • Taylor Larson finished with a team high 17 digs. 
UP NEXT
  • UWL will look to open Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) action on Wedesday, September 17 when they host UW-Platteville. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
