UWL Splits Doubleheader at UW-Platteville in Regular Season Finale; Clinches WIAC Tournament Berth

Platteville, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team completed its regular season with a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader split at UW-Platteville Saturday afternoon. The Eagles took the opener, 9-7 in 11 innings, before the Pioneers came back to earn a 6-4 win in the nightcap.
 
UWL is now 22-18 overall and 7-7 in the WIAC while UW-Platteville is 24-14 overall and 7-7 in the conference.
 
Both teams clinched a berth into the WIAC Tournament scheduled for May 9-10 at the regular season champion.

Carmen Follette earned the win in Saturday's opener.

 
In Saturday's opener, UWL scored four runs in the top of the third. Brooke Howard singled to lead-off the inning and went ot third when Cristin Casey reached on a throwing error. Casey stole second and Kyra Lard's RBI single scored Howard with the first run. After Lard stole second, Abbey Bosch deliverd Casey with a run-scoring single and a 2-0 lead. Lard scored on another Pioneers' error to make it 3-0 with Bosch stealing second. Lindsay Steien's sacrifice fly later scored Bosch for a 4-0 lead. 
 
UW-Platteville responded with five runs in its half of the third. Melissa Dietz drew a bases-loaded walk to score Taylor Roughen to make it 4-1. Taylor Lynch came in on Felicia Teubert's single to cut the lead to 4-2 and Jordan Johnson's two-run single tied the game at 4-4. Delaney Johnson later drove in Jordan Johnson with an RBI groundout to give UW-Platteville a 5-4 lead. 
 
UWL regained the lead with two runs in the fifth. Lard led-off with a double and Steien later walked with two outs. Marissa Pease' two-run single scored both runners for a 6-5 lead.
 
The Pioneers tied the game in the bottom of the sixth. Allison Peters scored the tying run on a Jordan Johnson two-out single. 
 
The game remained tied until Josie Flom's solo home run in the top of the 10th gave UWL a 7-6 lead, but UW-Platteville tied the game in the bottom of the inning with Peters coming in on Jordan Johnson's sacrifice fly. 
 
UWL tallied two unearned runs in the 11th inning. Howard singled to start the frame and went to third as Casey reached on an error. Casey advanced to second on the play. Lard's RBI groundout knocked in Howard to make it 8-7 and Bosch followed with a run-scoring single to score Casey for a 9-7 lead.
 
Carmen Follette (4-6) earned the win, pitching 7.0 innings in relief. She allowed eight hits, two runs and three walks while recording four strikeouts. Madi Lee started, going 2.0 innings, allowing two hits, three runs and two walks with two strikeouts. Claire Springer pitched 2.0 innings, allowing five hits and two runs.

UWL finished with 13 hits. Bosch went 3-for-6 with two RBI while Lard and Pease each finished 2-for-5. Howard finished 2-for-6. Lard and Pease each had two RBI with Lard scoring twice. Howard also scored two runs. 
 
Morgan Erickson (9-5) suffered the loss for UW-Platteville. She pitched 6.0 innings in relief, allowing five hits and three runs (one earned) with three strikeouts. 
 
The Pioneers totaled 15 hits with Peters finishing 4-for-6 with three runs. Teubert went 3-for-6 with one run and one RBI while Jordan Johnson finished 3-for-4 with four RBI and one run. 
 
UWL took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second in the nightcap on Flom's second home run of the doubleheader. UW-Platteville scored two runs in the bottom of the second as Lynch scored on a wild pitch to tie the game and Caitlin Giacomo's run-scoring single scored Alex Davis to give the Pioneers a 2-1 lead.
 
The Eagles regained the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the third, but the Pioneers tied it in the bottom half of the inning. Casey and Lard each had RBI groundouts for UWL to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead. Teubert's run-scoring single for UW-Platteville tied the game at 3-3.
 
In the top of the fourth, UWL took a 4-3 lead as Amber Gonzalez scored on a Howard single. UW-Platteville scored twice on three hits in the bottom of the fourth. Peters' RBI single tied the game and Dietz drew her second bases-loaded walk of the day to give the Pioneers a 5-4 lead. Roughen's sacrifice fly in the fifth extended the lead to 6-4.
 
Kaely Niemiec (6-5) suffered the loss for UWL, pitching 3.1 innings, allowing 10 hits, five runs and one walk while striking out two. Brynne Bieri went 2.2 innings, allowing two hits, one run and one walk.
 
The Eagles had 10 hits with Howard and Lard each finishing 2-for-4 while Gross went 2-for-2.
 
Mia Savage (2-0) picked up the win for UW-Platteville. She went 4.0 innings in relief, allowing four hits with two strikeouts.
 
The Pioneers totaled 12 hits as Savage, Peters, Dietz and Giacomo each had two hits.
