UWL Falls to Nationally-Ranked Colorado College in WIAC Semifinals; Faces Saint Benedict in Third-Place Match Saturday

Eau Claire, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse lacrosse team fell, 17-6, to 15th-ranked Colorado College Friday afternoon in UW-Eau Claire's Sonnentag Fieldhouse in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Tournament Semifinals (presented by Culver's).

The Eagles, the tournament's fourth seed, drops to 10-6 on the season. UWL will face second-seeded The College of Saint Benedict (Minn.) in the WIAC Tournament Third-Place Game on Saturday, May 3 at 3 p.m.

Colorado College, ranked 15th on the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division III Poll, improve to 17-3 overall. The Tigers, the top-seed for the tournament, plays third-seeded UW-Eau Claire in the championship game May 3 at 5:30 p.m.

UW-Eau Claire earned an 18-15 win over Saint Benedict (Minn.) in Friday's semifinals.

Colorado College scored the game's first four goals on Friday. Sofia Mancino scored first with 13:53 left in the first quarter. Charlotte Iler's goal with 13:33 remaining made it 2-0. Iler scored on a free position shot with 12:20 left and Riley Sterling's goal with 9:36 remaining off a Mancino assist extended the lead to 4-0.

UWL got on the scoreboard with 4:21 left in the first quarter as Megan Maloney scored on an Ava Schiltz assist to cut the lead to 4-1.

The Tigers scored the last three goals of the quarter to take a 7-1 advantage. Grace Bean scored on Tobin Lonergan's assist with 2:13 remaining. Meilani Molina's goal off Peyton Murphy's assist with :32 left gave Colorado College an 6-1 lead and Murphy finished the scoring in the quarter with :12 remaining.

Colorado College outscored UWL, 5-1, in the second quarter to take a 12-2 halftime lead. The Tigers took a 11-1 lead with four straight goals before the Eagles' Megan Feeney scored off Angie Olla's assist with 3:52 remaining in the second quarter to make it 11-2. Lonergan's goal on Ella Roe assist with :52 left in the quarter gave Colorado College its 12-2 halftime lead.

Both teams scored a goal in the third quarter. Schiltz scored with 14:16 left to cut the lead to 12-3 before Bean scored with 1:47 remaining to give Colorado College a 13-3 lead.

The teams traded the first goals of the fourth quarter. Murphy gave the Tigers a 14-3 lead with 11:35 left on a Grace Weber assist. Evie Brilz scored off a Emily Wrobbel assist with 9:22 remaining for UWL. Mancino scored her second goal of the game for Colorado College with 6:51 left for a 15-4 lead. The Eagles tallied the next two goals with Schiltz scoring on Wrobbel's assist with 4:25 left and Brilz scored unassisted with 3:24 remaining to cut the lead to 15-6. Emilia Calamari (1:15) and Murphy (:16) finished the scoring for the Tiges. Hannah Lay and Iler recorded assists.

UWL finished with 20 shots. Schiltz and Brilz each had two goals while Wrobbel recorded a pair of assists. Stefania Rossi suffered the loss, registering nine saves. She also had a team-high six ground balls. Maloney finished with five ground balls.

Colorado College recorded 33 shots in the game. Iler, Molina and Murphy each scored three times for the Tigers. Murphy added a team-leading two assists while Molina had a team-high seven ground balls. Cassidy Schnaufer earned the win, recording five saves.
