Baseball Picks Up Two WIAC Wins With Sweep Of UW-River Falls; Witte Finishes Day With Eight Hits

River Falls, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Baseball team picked up two Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) wins on Saturday afternoon as they swept a doubleheader with UW-River Falls.

HOW IT HAPPENED
   
Game One 
  • UWL took an early lead as they scored three runs in the first two innings to lead 3-0. Chris VandenHeuvel and Anthony Vivian each singled to start the game. VandenHeuvel then scored when George Seaman reached on a fielders choice in the first inning. With one out in the second inning, Andrew Rajkovich doubled while Emiliano Ramos singled with two outs to put two runners on base. Nate Witte then hit a double which scored both Rajkovich and Ramos for the early lead. 
  • The score remained 3-0 until the fifth inning when UWL added two more runs to take a 5-0 lead. Seaman singled with one out and advanced to second when Mac Born walked. After they both moved up a base on a wild pitch, Seaman scored on Jack Olver's single while Born scored on Cam Dupont's single.
  • Witte led off the sixth inning with a single and stole second base before scoring on VandenHeuvel's double to make it 6-0. After a groundout, Seaman hit his team leading 11th home run of the season to extend UWL's lead to 8-0. 
  • The Falcons would get on the score board in their half of the sixth inning as they scored three runs. Kale Twombly hit an RBI doulble, Tanner Hraby hit a sacrifice fly and Andrew Athmann hit an RBI single for the Falcons three runs. 
  • Rajkovich led off the ninth inning with his 10th home run of the season for the final run of the game.

    Game Two
  • UWL took a commanding lead in the top of the second inning in game two as they scored six runs on six hits and an error. Born led off the inning with a single and advanced to third on Calvin Hargrove's double. After a fly out, Witte singled to scored Born and VandenHeuvel singled to score Hargrove. Vivian was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Seaman reached on a fielder choice which scored Witte. Back-to-back singles by Olver (scoring VandenHeuvel) and Rajkovich (scoring Olver and Seaman) for the final three runs of the inning and give UWL a 6-0 lead. 
  • Witte's sacrifice bunt scored Hargrove who had reached on a walk and advanced to third on Fleischman's single to extend UWL's lead to 7-0. 
  • The Eagles would add the final four runs of the game in their half of the ninth inning. Driving runs in for the Eagles was Fleischman (RBI single to score Logan Pye), Witte (two RBI single plus error which scored Fleischman and Charlie Rowan) and James Rae (RBI single to score Witte).

FROM THE BOX SCORE
   
Game One
  • Offensively, UWL finished with nine runs on 19 hits and one walk. 
  • Witte finished a perfect 5-for-5 with two doubles, two RBIs and one runs scored while Seaman was 4-for-5 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored. 
  • Rajkovich (2-for-5), VandenHeuvel (2-for-6) and Ramos (2-for-5) each recorded a multiple hits as well for the Eagles.
  • AJ Curtiss (3-1) pitched 5.1 innings to earn the win as he allowed three runs on seven hits while striking out five. Brady Lash (1) came on in relief to earn his first save of the season as he did not allow a run while giving up one hit and one walk while striking out three in 3.2 innings.
  • UW-River Falls scored three runs on eight hits and one walk.
  • Athmann led the Falcon offense as he finished 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. 
  • Cade Bruett (1-5) suffered the loss on the mound as he allowed five runs on 11 hits and one walk while striking out two in 5.0 innings. 
 Game Two
  • UWL finished with 11 runs on 14 hits and five walks in game two. 
  • Witte stayed out in game two as he finished 3-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored. 
  • Rajkovich finished 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs while Fleischman was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. 
  • Chayce Osterhaus (6-1) earned his sixth win of the season as he allowed six hits while striking out eight in 7.0 innings of work. 
  • The Falcons offense finished with eight hits as a team. 
  • Jackson Conway (0-3) suffered the loss for the Falcons as he allowed seven runs (six earned) on nine hits and two walks while striking out two in 4.0 innings.
