Baseball Splits WIAC Doubleheader With UW-Platteville

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Baseball team earned a doubleheader split with UW-Platteville on Wednesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
   
Game One 
  • Sam Meidenbauer would give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run to center field.  
  • Meidenbauer then extended the Pioneers lead to 2-0 with another solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning. 
  • The Eagles would finally get on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning as Mac Born hit his fourth home run of year to cut UWL's deficit to 2-1.
  • The score would remain 2-1 until the top of the eighth inning when the Eagles would tie the game with a run. Pinch hitter Luke Walton led off with a double to center field. Brady Burrill pinch ran for Walton and advanced to third on Chris VandenHeuvel's one out single. With two outs, George Seaman singled to right field to score Burrill and tie the game at two.
  • UWL would retire the first two batters of the eighth inning with back-to-back strikeouts before Trinity Beland singled to up the middle. Caleb Parker put the Pioneers up 4-2 with a two-run home run to left center field. 
  • The Eagles would threaten in the top of the ninth inning as Jack Olver singled and advanced to third on a out double by Born. However, UW-Platteville reliever Peerson Kephart induce a ground out and a fly out to end the game. 

    Game Two
  • UWL jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning Seaman drove in a run on a ground out and Anthony Vivian hit a two-run home run. 
  • The Pioneers would get those three runs back in the bottom half of the first inning as they scored three runs on two hits and an error.  Jake Wegner and Meidenbauer each drove in a run while Parker scored on a wild pitch.
  • VandenHeuvel led off the third inning with an infield single and advanced on a throwing error on the play. Seaman then brought home VandenHeuvel with a single to give UWL a 4-3 lead. After a strikeout, Vivian drove in his third run of the game with a single to left field which scored Seaman from second base. 
  • After a 30 minute delay after three innings due to lightning, UWL extended their lead to 7-3 with two runs. Emiliano Ramos walked with two outs in the top of the fourth and scored on VandenHeuvel's double. Walton followed that with a single up the middle to score VandenHeuvel for the second run of the inning. 
  • UW-Platteville would cut their deficit to 7-4  in the fifth inning on Xavier Lara's RBI single which scored Anthony Massa from second base. 
  • In the bottom of the eighth, Spencer Robertson led off with a single and advanced to third on Brady Katterhagen's double. Riley Dutton brought Robertson in to score on a sacrifice fly to cut the Eagles lead to 7-5. UWL relief pitcher Mitchel Fassbender would then record a strikeout and ground out to end the Pioneers threat. 
  • The Pioneers would not go down quietly in the bottom half of the ninth inning as they loaded the bases with one out. Massa singled, Meidenbauer walked and Connor Gresens singled to put the potentional tying run on second base and winning run on first. Pinch hitter Mason Molitor would reach on a fielders choice that scored Massa while pinch runner Dylan Rippentrop was forced out at second base for the second out of the inning. UWL relief pitcher Tucker Bouche would then record the final out via a ground ball to end the game.

Game One
  • Offensively, UWL finished with two runs on nine hits and three walks. 
  • Born (2-for-4, home run) and Seaman (2-for-4, RBI) led the Eagles offense in game one.
  • Owen Anderson (2-2) suffered the loss as he allowed three runs on five hits while striking out nine in 7.2 innings. 
  • The Pioneers finished with four runs on six hits.
  • Kephart (2-2) came on in relief to earn the win as he allowed one run on six hits and one walk in 4.0 innings. Pierce Nelson started the game for the Pioneers as he allowed one run on three hits and two walks while striking out three in 5.0 innings. 
  • Meidenbauer led the Pioneers offense as he finished 2-for-3 with two home runs, two RBIs and two runs scored. 
 Game Two
  • UWL finished with seven runs on 10 hits and one walk in game two.
  • Vivian (2-for-4, HR, three RBIs), Walton (2-for-4, 2b, RBI and run scored) and VandenHeuvel (2-for-5, 2b, RBI and two runs scored) led the Eagle offense.
  • Isaiah Katz (6-1) came on in relief of starting pitcher Daelen Johnson to earn the win as he allowed one run on seven hits and two walks while striking out three in 4.0 innings of relief. Bouche (1) pitched the ninth inning to earn the save for the Eagles. 
  • UW-Platteville finished the second game with six runs on 13 hits and four walks.
  • Sawyer Molitor (0-1) suffered the loss for the Pioneers as he allowed two runs on three hits while striking out two in 1.1 innings of relief pitching. 
  • Meidenbauer (1-for-3, 2 walks, RBI) and Wegner (2-for-5, 2b, RBI and run scored) led the Pioneers offense.
