Baseball Comes From Behind To Sweep UW-Eau Claire

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Baseball team had to come from behind in both games as they swept UW-Eau Claire in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader on Friday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
   
Game One 
  • UW-Eau Claire would strike first as they scored three runs in the top of the third inning. Austin Curti led off the inning with a single and stole second base. He would move to third on Eli Keirstead's single. Drew Salyers followed that with a double to score Curti and put Keirstead on third. After a strikeout and a hit batsman loaded the bases, Keirstead would score on a passed ball to give UW-Eau Claire a 2-0 lead. Logan Hesselman's ground out to second would bring Salyers home for the third run of the inning. 
  • George Seaman would put the Eagles on the scoreboard in the fourth inning with his team leading 10th home run of the season to cut UWL's deficit to 3-1. 
  • Austin Buck would extend the Blugolds lead to 5-1 with a two run home run in the top of the fifth inning. 
  • UWL would get those two runs back in their half of the fifth inning as Chris VandenHeuvel led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on Anthony Vivian's single. After they advanced a bag on a passed ball, Jack Olver brought them both home with a double to pull the Eagles to with in 5-3. 
  • The score would remain 5-3 until the eighth inning when the Blugolds would score a run on an RBI single by Cade Mueller to take a 6-3 lead. 
  • In the bottom half of the eighth inning and with one out, Emiliano Ramos led off with a walk and advanced to second on a ground out. Mac Born and Calvin Hargrove each walked to load the bases. Nate Witte then doubled which brought both Ramos and Born into score to cut the Blugold's lead to 6-5. VandenHeuvel then singled to bring home Hargrove to tie the game at six. 
  • After a 1,2,3 top of the ninth inning, Seaman led off with a single and advanced to second when Olver walked. Ramos then moved Seaman and Olver up with a sacrifice bunt. Andrew Rajkovich was intentionally walked to load the bases before the Blugolds would record a strikeout for the second out. Alec Campbell then drew a walk to force Seaman in for the winning run.

    Game Two
  • Game two would enter the fourth inning with neither team scoring. In the bottom of the fourth and one out, Vivian reached on a fielders choice and advanced to second when Rajkovich reached on a fielding error. After a pop out for the second out, Born singled up the middle to score Vivian for the first run of the game.
  • The game would remain 1-0 until the seventh inning when UW-Eau Claire took a 2-1 lead. With one out, Salyers singled and advanced to second on a single by Cole Clausen. Salyers and Clausen moved up a base on a ground out.  After Diego Caicedo was intentionally walked, Dustan Green singled to right field to score both Salyers and Clausen. 
  • UWL would get two runs of their own in the seventh inning to take a 3-2 lead. Keegan Fleischman singled and advanced to third on VandenHeuvel's single. Witte would then reach on a fielders choice sacrifice bunt which scored Fleischman to tie the game at 2. Seaman's single would load the bases before UW-Eau Claire would record two outs. VandenHeuvel then came scampering home on a wild pitch to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead. 
  • Relief pitcher Tucker Bouche would pitch a clean eighth and ninth inning to seal the Eagles win.

FROM THE BOX SCORE
   
Game One
  • Offensively, UWL finished with seven runs on 10 hits and 10 walks. 
  • Seaman (2-for-4, home run, a walk, two runs scored and an RBI), Rajkovich (3-for-4, a walk) and Vivian (2-for-5 with a run) led the Eagles offense in game one.
  • Caleb Matl (1-0) came on in relief to pitch the final 4.2 innings to earn the win as he allowed one run on two hits while striking out four. Isaiah Katz started the game for the Eagles as he allowed five runs (four earned) on  six hits and two walks while striking out two in 4.1 innings. 
  • UW-Eau Claire finished with six runs on eight hits and two walks.
  • Sebastian De La Toba (2-2) suffered the loss for the Blugolds as he allowed one run on one hit and three walks in 1.0 inning. Brennan Cohen started for the Blugolds going 5.0 innings and allowing three runs on six hits and four walks while striking out three. 
  • Buck led the UW-Eau Claire offense as he finished 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored. 
 Game Two
  • UWL finished with three runs on nine hits and four walks in game two. 
  • Seaman (3-for-4) and VandenHeuvel (2-for-5, run scored) each finished with multiple hits for the Eagles.
  • Witte and Born each drove in a run for the Eagles.
  • Bouche (2-0) came on in relief to pitch the final 2.1 innings to earn his second win of the season. Bouche did not allow a Blugold to reach base. AJ Curtis got the start for the Eagles as he went 6.2 innings, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out three. 
  • The Blugolds finished with two runs on four hits and two walks.
  • Tyler Webb (0-2) came on in relief for the Blugolds to pitch the final four innings as he suffered the loss. Webb allowed two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out two. Evan Fischer made the start for UW-Eau Claire as he allowed one run on six hits and one walk while striking out three in four innings of work. 
  • Green led the Blugolds offense as he finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
