Eagles Come Up Short In Second Round Of NCAA III Tournament

Whitewater Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team battled until the end but their upset bid came up short as they fell 50-49 to UW-Whitewater in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Second Round Saturday night.

Location: Kachel Gymnasium, Whitewater, Wis. 
Records: UWL 17-12, UW-Whitewater 24-6.
NCAA Tournament History: UWL was playing in their sixth NCAA national tournament in program history. UWL earned its first win since 1988 in the NCAA Tournament last night over Colorado College.

HOW DID IT HAPPEN
  • UWL scored the first four points of the game Grace Knupp hit back-to-back jumpers. The Warhawks then scored 12 of the next 14 points to lead 12-6 with 1:42 left in the first quarter. An Ali Sprangers three-pointer and Kailee Meeker layup would tie the score at 14 at the end of the first quarter.
  • Offense was very limited in the second quarter as both teams were limited to just two field goals and six points apiece as the score was tied at 20 at halftime. 
  • The two teams traded baskets until UWL took a 26-25 lead on a layup by Madisyn Kilboten with 6:42 left in the third quarter. Trailing 29-28, Lindsey Knuth would give UWL a 31-29 lead with 3:43 on the clock. A Krupp jumper would give the Eagles a 35-32 lead before the Warhawks scored four straight to lead 36-35 with :39 left. Meeker would hit two free throws with :18 left as UWL lead 37-36 after the third quarter. 
  • UW-Whitewater scored the first four points of the fourth quater to take a 40-37 lead but Sprangers would hit a three-pointer to tie it at 40 with 8:11 left in the game. After UW-Whitewater took a 43-40 lead, Malia Nelson would hit a driving layup followed by a three-pointer to give UWL a 45-43 lead with 2:37 remaining. Both teams would trade baskets including Nelson giving the Eagles a 49-47 lead (1:05) with a layup but Katie Hildebrandt would tie it at 49 with her own layup with :33 second left. UWL would be unable to score as Meeker's three-pointer would not go with :08 left. After a timeout, Hildebrandt was fouled with less than one second on the clock. She would hit a free throw to give UW-Whitewater a 50-49 lead and the Eagles would not get a shot off on their final possession.

FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • As a team, the Eagles finished 20-of-46 (43.5%) from the floor including four-of-16 (25.0%) from the three-point line. UWL was also five-of-10 (50%) from the free throw line. 
  • Nelson finished with a team high 12 while Milne finished with nine. 
  • Meeker added six points, four rebounds and four assists for the UWL. 
  • Milne also finished with a team high six rebounds. 
  • UW-Whitewater shot 20-of-59 (33.9%) from the floor including two-of-17 (11.8%) from the three point line. UW-Whitewater was also eight-of-11 (72.7%) from the free throw line.
  • Katie Hildebrandt led the Warhawks with 14 points and eight rebounds.
  • Finishing with a double-double was Kacie Carollo as she finished with 13 points and 13 rebounds.
