Baseball Opens WIAC Play With Doubleheader Sweep Of UW-Stout; Rajkovich Hits Three Home Runs

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Baseball team opened Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a doubleheader sweep of UW-Stout Thursday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
   
Game One 
  • With one out in the top of the first, Nate Witte singled and advanced to second on a ground out. George Seaman then singled to score Witte and give the Eagles an early 1-0 lead. 
  • Anthony Vivian led off the third with a walk and then advanced to third when Seaman walked which included a wild pitch. Emiliano Ramos then reached on a fielding error to load the bases. Then with two outs, Andrew Rajkovich hit his first home run of the season to extend UWL's lead to 5-1. Calvin Hargrove followed that with his first home run of the season to make it 6-1. 
  • Witte doubled to lead off the fourth inning followed by a Vivian walk. After Vivian and Witte stole second/third base, Mac Born drove them both in with a single to left field to put UWL up 8-1.
  • Witte's RBI single to left field would score Rajkovich, who led off with a walk, to extend the Eagles lead to 9-1 in the fifth.
  • The Blue Devils would score a run sixth inning on an RBI ground out by Austin Miller. 
  • UWL would score seven runs on three hits and an error in the bottom half of the sixth. Logan Pye would drive in two runs with his pinch hit single while Jack Olver, Chris VandenHeuvel and Eli Roberts each drove in a run during 
    Game Two
  • The Blue Devils would take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning of game two on Leyten Bowers two-run home run.
  • UWL would tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the second inning when Born walked and advanced to second on Olver's single. Rajkovich would load the bases with a single while Keegan Fleischman scored Born with a sacrifice fly. Olver then scored when Alec Campbell reached on a fielders choice. 
  • UW-Stout retook the lead on Miller's RBI single to put the Blue Devils up 3-2 in the third inning.
  • UWL would get that run back and more in their half of the inning as they scored three runs on two hits and an error. Seaman hit his fourth home run of the game to make it 3-3 while Rajkovich hit a two-run home run to put UWL up 5-3. 
  • Billy Jones' RBI single cut the Blue Devils deficit to 5-4 in the top of the four inning. 
  • Seaman led off the fifth inning with a single and advanced to second when Born walked. They would both steal a base before Olver drove in Seaman with a sacrifice fly. Rajkovich would follow that up with his third home run of the day to make it 8-4. Fleischman would reach on a bunt single and steal second base. Then with two outs, Witte hit his second home run of the season to put UWL up 10-4. 
  • UWL would score two more runs (12-4) in the seventh inning as Jack Olver singled and scored on Fleischman's sacrifice while Rajkovich scored on Witte's triple. 
  • UW-Stout would score three runs on three hits and an error in the top of the ninth but that would be all the scoring.

Game One
  • Offensively, UWL finished with 16 runs on 12 hits and seven walks. 
  • Rajkovich led the Eagles offense going 2-for-3 with a home run, a walk, four RBIs and three runs scored
  • Witte finished 3-for-4 with a walk, three runs scored and one RBI.
  • Owen Deprez (3-0) picked up the win for the Eagles as he allowed two runs on three hits and four walks while striking out 10 in 6.0 innings of work. 
  • Luke Carrier (1-1) suffered the loss for the Blue Devils as he allowed eight runs (3 earned) on seven hits and three walks while striking out five in 3.1 innings.
  • Jack Redwine (1-for-2, RBI, walk) and Leyten Bowers (1-for-3 run scored) led UW-Stout's offense. 
 Game Two
  • Offensively, the Eagles scored 12 runs on 11 hits and four walks.
  • Rajkovich finished game two 3-for-4 with two home runs, four RBIs and three runs while Witte was 3-for-4 with a home run, a walk, three RBI and one run scored. 
  • Olver was 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored.
  • Mitchel Fassbender (1-0) came on in relief to pitch 4.0 innings, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out seven.
  • Austin Miller (0-3) suffered the loss for the Blue Devils as he allowed five runs on five hits and three walks in 4.0 innings. 
  • Bowers (2-for-4, 3 RBIs, 3 runs scored) and AJ Kargel (3-for-4, 2 runs scored) led the UW-Stout offense.
