Baseball Defeats Ripon and Maritime On Day 2 Of Spring Trip

Davenport, Fla. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team picked up two wins on day two of their spring break trip as they defeated Ripon College (Wis.) and SUNY Maritime College (NY) on Wednesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One - Ripon College
  • UWL got on the scoreboard right away in the bottom of the first inning as they scored three runs on two hits and an error. Nate Witte led off by reaching via an error and scored on Chris VandenHeuvel's double. After VandenHeuvel advanced to third on a ground out by Anthony Vivian, George Seaman hit his second home run in two days to put the Eagles up 3-0. 
  • Ripon College (Wis.) would cut their deficit to 3-2 in the top of the fourth inning on Jason Clark's two run double.
  • With one out in the bottom of the fourth, Jack Olver hit his first home run of the season to give UWL a 4-2 lead. 
  • The Red Hawks would get that run back in the fifth inning as Brock Warren drove in a run with a ground out to make it 4-3 UWL.
  • Witte would give UWL a 5-3 lead in the seventh inning as he led off with a double and scored on a fielding error by the Red Hawks.
  • UWL would add two insurance runs in their half of the eighth inning as Olver reached on a fielders choice and advanced to third on Luke Walton's pinch hit single. Cam Dupont then drove Olver with his single to make it 6-3. Keegan Fleischman would load the bases with his one out single. Witte would score Eli Roberts, who had pinch ran for Walton, on his sacrifice fly to right field. 
  • The Red Hawks would threaten in the ninth inning as they put their first two batters on base but Eagles relief pitcher Trace Vrbancic would get two fly outs and a strikeout to end the game. 
Game Two - Maritime College
  • UWL once again jumped out to a 3-0 lead as they scored two runs in the top of the first and added a run in the second inning. In the first inning, Witte reached after being hit by a pitch and advanced to second on VandenHeuvel's single. One our later, Vivian's single scored Witte. VandenHeuvel would steal third base and score on Seaman's sacrifice fly. Calvin Hargrove led off the second with a single, advanced to second on a ground out and scored Witte's double. 
  • The Eagles extended their lead to 4-0 in the third inning as Olver hit a two-out triple and scored on Hargrove's single.
  • Maritime would get on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the third as Alex Bardi hit a two run home run followed by Michael Frazzetta's solo home run to cut their deficit to 4-3. 
  • The score remained 4-3 until the seventh inning when Eli Roberts drove in a run with a single to make it 5-3. 
  • UWL added two more insurance runs in the top of the eighth as Emiliano Ramos led off with a walk and advanced to second on Seaman's single. Mac Born then hit his first triple of the season to score both Ramos and Seaman to put UWL up 7-3.
  • In the bottom of the ninth inning, the Privateers Owen Weber led off with a double and one out later scored on Frazzetta's single to make it 7-4. After one more hit for Maritime, UWL relief pitcher Caleb Matl would retire the final two batters to end the Privateers threat and seal the Eagles win.

FROM THE BOX SCORE
Game One - Ripon College
  • Offensively, UWL finished with seven runs on 13 hits.
  • Dupont led the Eagles going 3-for-4 with an RBI while VandenHeuvel was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
  • Seaman and Olver each hit a home run while Vivian recorded his first triple of the season.
  • Chase Osterhaus (2-0) picked up his second win of the season as he allowed three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out six in 5.0 innings. Trace Vrbancic (S,1) earned his first save of the season as he pitched the final two innings and allowed just one base runner to reach, via a walk, while striking out two. 
  • Michael Sheehy (0-1) suffered the loss for Ripon College as he allowed seven runs (five earned) on 12 hits while striking out three in 7.1 innings. 
  • Clark led the Red Hawks offense by going 1-for-1 with two walks and two RBIs. 
Game Two - Maritime College
  • Offensively the Eagles scored seven runs on 13 hits and five walks. 
  • Four Eagles finished with multi hit games led by Calvin Hargrove who finished 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored
  • Witte, Born and VandenHeuvel each had two hits with Born finishing with two RBIs.
  • Owen Deprez (2-0) earned the win by allowing three runs on sevens hit and two walks while striking out seven in 5.1 innings. 
  • Matl (S,2) earned his second save of the season by pitching the final 3.2 innings and allowing just one run on five hits and one walk while striking out five. 
  • Matt Demme (1-2) suffered the loss for the Privateers as he allowed four runs on nine hits and three walks in 5.2 innings.
  • Frazzetta led Maritime finishing 3-for-3 with two walks, a home run, two RBIs and one run scored. 
  • Bardi also hit a home run for the Privateers as he finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored.
