Baseball Opens Spring Break Trip With Win Over Illinois Tech

Davenport, Fla. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team opened their spring break trip with a decisive win over Illinois Tech Tuesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UWL got on the scoreboard right away in the bottom of the first inning as they scored six runs on two hits and an error. George Seaman and Mac Born both walked with the base loaded to score the first two runs of the game followed by an RBI single from Jack Olver. One out later, Calvin Hargrove singled to right field to drive in two runs and put UWL up 5-0. Chris VandenHeuvel would cap off the scoring with a sacrifice fly to put UWL up 6-0.
  • Emiliano Ramos would lead of the second inning by reaching on a throwing error and advanced to second when Seaman walked. Born then drove Ramos in with a single to right field as UWL led 7-0. 
  • UWL would make it 10-0 in the bottom of the third as they scored three runs on three hits. VandenHeuvel would drive in a run with a single while Seaman and Anthony Vivian each drew a bases loaded walk to score runs. 
  • In the fifth inning, Ramos once again led of an inning by reaching on an error while Eli Roberts, pinch hitting for Vivian, was hit by a pitch. Seaman would then put the Eagles up 13-0 with a 3-run home run. UWL would score three more runs in the fifth to take a 16-0 lead. VandenHeuvel doubled and Witte singled to each drive in a run while Alec Campbell drove in a run when each reached on an error. 
  • UWL would get the final three runs of the game in the top of the sixth as they scored three runs on two hits and an error. With the bases loaded, Jack Peterson reached on a fielders choice which scored  Brady Lash. A throwing error on the play would allow Peterson to advance to second and Charley Rowan to score. VandenHeuvel would then record his third hit of the game, a single, which scored Peterson to make it 19-0.

FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • Offensively, UWL finished with 19 runs on 13 hits and nine walks.
  • VandenHeuvel finished the day 3-for-4 with four RBIs and a run scored while Hargrove was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Witte finished 2-for-6 with two runs scored and an RBI.
  • With his first home run of the season, Seaman was 1-for-1 with four RBIs, three walks and a run scored for the Eagles.
  • Isaiah Katz (1-1) earned the win on the mound for the Eagles as he allowed five hits and a walk while striking out three in 5.0 innings of work.
  • Aaron Schwechler and Ben Ott each pitched an inning for the Eagles and did not allow a hit while recording two strikeouts a piece.
  • Alexander Lazes (0-2) suffered the loss the Scarlet Hawks as he allowed six runs (four earned) on two hits and four walks in 0.1 innings. 
  • Illinois Tech was led offensively by Timmy Old who went 2-for-2.
