Slow Start Too Much To Overcome As Eagles Fall To UW-Oshkosh In WIAC Semifinals

Oshkosh, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team fell behind big early and were unable to overcome the slow start as they fell to top seed UW-Oshkosh in the semifinals of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament (presented by Culvers) on Thursday night.

Next Up: UWL now waits to see if they get an at-large bid to the National Collegiate Athletic Association III Championships which will be announced on Monday, March 3 1:30 p.m. The 64-team, single-elimination tournament consists of 43 automatic qualifiers and 21 at-large bids. The semifinals and championship will be held at the Cregger Center in Salem, Virginia, on March 20 and 22.
                    
HOW DID IT HAPPEN
  • UW-Oshkosh scored the first 12 points of the game and led 17-4 at the end of the first quarter. UWL was held to just four free throws in the opening period as they shot 0-for-10 from the floor including 0-for-seven from three-point range.  
  • The Titans would extend their lead to its largest of the half at 31-10 (3:21) before the Eagles scored nine of the final 13 points of the first half. Ali Sprangers and Madisyn Kilboten hit back-to-back three-pointers in the final minute as UWL trailed 35-19 at halftime. 
  • Sprangers led off the second half with a three-pointer followed by a Grace Knupp jumper to cut the Eagles deficit to 35-24 early in the third quarter. UW-Oshkosh would score six straight to quickly extend its lead to 41-24 with 7:13 left in the third quarter. Molly Janke would then hit a three-pointer followed by a Knupp jumper and Kailee Meeker jumper to make it 41-31 (1:01). The Titans would a get a jumper with :32 left as they led 43-31 at the end of three quarters.
  • UW-Oshkosh scored nine of the first 10 points of the second half to put them up 52-32 with 6:33 left in the game. However, UWL would not get any closer than 12 points the rest of the way. 

FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • As a team, the Eagles finished 17-of-55 (30.9%) from the floor including seven-of-25 (28%) from the three-point line. UWL was also six-of-eight (75%) from the free throw line.
  • Milne led the Eagles with 14 points and nine rebounds.
  • Molly Janke added eight points of the bench while Grace Knupp chipped in seven.
  • UW-Oshkosh shot 22-of-50 (44.0%) from the floor including eight-of-16 (50%) from the three-point line. The Titans were also seven-of-14 (50%) from the free throw line. 
  • The Titans finished with five players in double figures led by Alex Rondorf, Kayce Caile and Avery Poole each scoring 12 points.
