Big Second Half Sends Eagles Past Luther College

Box Score La Crosse, Wis. - A big second half helps send the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team past Luther College 83-60 on Saturday night.

Next Up: The Eagles will will be back on the road as they travel to Bloomington, Ill. to play in the Illinois Wesleyan Tournament on Saturday, November 29th and Sunday, November 30th. UWL opens the tournament against Illinois Weslean University at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

FROM THE SIDELINES HOW DID IT HAPPEN
  • UWL jumped out to a 10-2 early lead as they got three-pointers from Ali Sprangers and Grace Knupp 4:04 into the game. The Eagles would extend their lead to 18-8 on back-to-back three-pointers by Jenna Welsch and Katie Waukau with 3:15 left in the first quarter. The Norse would pull with in 22-19 at the end of the first quarter by outscoring the Eagles 11-4. 
  • It would be the Norse that got off to a fast start in the second quarter as they opened with a 15-2 run to lead 34-24 with 4:12 left. Trailing 36-26, UWL outscored Luther 8-3 to trail 39-34 at the half. Madisyn Kilboten would spark the mini run with two three-pointers for UWL. 
  • The Eagles would even the score at 43-43 after a three-point play by Kilboten and three more points from Sydney Torgerson. The Eagles would regain the lead as they used a 11-3 run to lead 54-46 with 1:28 left in the third quarter. After the Eagles extended their lead to it largest of the third quarter at 57-48, the Norse would get two free throws to trail 57-50 heading into the fourth quarter. 
  • It was all UWL in the fourth quarter as the Eagles outscored the Norse 26-10. The Eagles defense held the Norse to just three points over the first 5:30 as they built 73-53 lead. A layup by Emma Jossie with 1:01 left in the game would extend the Eagles lead to its largest of the game at 82-58.

FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • As a team, the Eagles finished 31-of-68 (45.6%) from the floor including 10-of-23 (43.5%) from the three-point line. UWL was also 11-of-19 (57.9%) from the free throw line.
  • Kilboten led the Eagles in scoring with 14 points while Knupp chipped in 11 points and four assists. 
  • Senior Malia Nelson filled the box score as she finished with nine points, 11 rebounds, eight assists and three steals. 
  • Also making big contributions for the Eagles was Welsch (nine points), Molly Janke (eight points, six rebounds) and Sprangers (eight points, five rebounds). 
  • The Norse shot 22-of-57 (38.6%) from the floor including five-of-16 (31.3%) from the free throw line. Luther was also 11-of-19 (57.9%) from the free throw line. 
  • Natalie Beaver led the Norse with a game high 23 points and nine rebounds while Haylie Strum added 22 points and six rebounds.
