South Bend, Ind. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's cross country team finished sixth at the Joe Piane University of Notre Dame (Ind.) Invitational Friday morning at Burke Golf Course & Cross Country Course.
The Eagles, ranked first on the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Top-30 Poll, finished with 172 team points.
Notre Dame (Ind.) won the team title with 40 points with Boise State University (Idaho) second with 71 and the University of Wyoming third with 125. Purdue University (Ind.) finished fourth (146) and Grand Valley State University (Mich.) fifth (158).Â
The University of Cincinnati (Ohio) was seventh (239) followed by Liberty University (Va.) eighth (243), Bradley University (Ill.) ninth (255) and the University of North Carolina Charlotte 10th (289). A total of 18 teams competed.
UWL was the lone NCAA Division III team to compete in the meet.
The Eagles had four runners place in the top-43 on Friday, including
Grant Matthai finishing 17th overall with a time of 23:17.0 on the 8,000-meter course. UWL's
Jayden Zywicki placed 23rd (23:34.3),
Aidan Matthai 30th (23:39.4) and
Joey Sullivan 43rd (23:51.3).
Chuck Vater finished 63rd (24:07.3) with
Nico Castellanos 91st (24:27.1),
Aidan Manning 120th (24:55.3) and
Declan Gregg 139th (25:40.5).
Nickson Kogel from Cincinnati won the title (22:39.4). A total of 150 runners completed the race.
UWL returns to action Saturday, October 18 at the Augustana College (Ill.) Interregional Invitational at 11 a.m.
