1996 Men’s Cross Country
UW-La Crosse won the 1996 NCAA Division III Men’s Cross Country Championship, its first national title in program history. The Eagles captured the championship at Highland Springs Golf Course in Rock Island, Illinois. UW-La Crosse scored 86 points to outdistance second-place North Central College (Ill.) with 94 points.
Head coach Phil Esten led UW-La Crosse to the team title. Three runners earned NCAA III All-America honors with Brad Wilson finishing seventh, Brett Altergott eighth and James Ratcliff 11th. Dan Murphy was 36th, Elliot Schultz 46th, Mike Gutho 83rd and Jason Karls 98th.

UW-La Crosse won the 2001 NCAA Division III Men’s Cross Country Championship, its second in school history. The Eagles captured the title at Highland Springs Golf Course in Rock Island, Illinois. UW-La Crosse scored 80 points to outdistance second-place Calvin College (Mich.) with 140 points.
Head coach Don Fritsch led the Eagles to the national title. He was named the NCAA Division III Coach of the Year. Tyler Foos placed third, Ross Substad seventh and Jason Tomrell 11th to earn All-America honors. Joel Hirschboeck finished 39th for UW-La Crosse while P.J. Lantzy was 41st, Nick Madsen 76th and Dan Sutton 115th.

UW-La Crosse won the 2005 NCAA Division III Men’s Cross Country Championship, its third in program history. The Eagles captured the 2005 title at the Dornoch Golf Course in Delaware, Ohio. UW-La Crosse scored 94 points with Calvin College (Mich.) second with 117 points.
Head coach Don Fritsch was named the 2005 United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA Division III Coach of the Year. Mark Creger placed 15th and Nate Hoffman 17th to earn All-America accolades. Kevin Oelstrom finished 36th, John Heitzman 46th, Scott Mueller 49th, Mike Herlihy 144th and Bill Walkowicz 198th.
2024 Men’s Cross Country
UW-La Crosse won the 2024 NCAA Division III Men’s Cross Country Championship, its first since 2005, and fourth in program history. The Eagles captured the 2024 title at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute, Indiana. UW-La Crosse scored 77 points to outdistance second-place Wartburg College (Iowa) with 173 points.

Head coach Derek Stanley was named U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division III Coach of the Year. Four UW-La Crosse runners earned All-America honors, including Grant Matthai placing third and Aidan Matthai fifth while Joey Sullivan finished 16th and Jayden Zywicki 20th. Adam Loenser was 41st, Chuck Vater 69th and Corey Fairchild 117th.
2025 Men’s Cross Country
The UW-La Crosse men’s cross-country team captured its second consecutive national title in 2025 in Spartanburg, South Carolina. UWL won its fifth national title with 82 team points. SUNY Geneseo was second with 132 points.

Four runners earned All-America honors under head coach Derek Stanley, all finishing in the top 20. Grant Matthai was fifth, Aidan Matthai seventh, Jack Zywicki ninth and Joey Sullivan 17th. Mason Brown placed 71st, Chuck Vater 72nd, and Nico Castellanos 100th. Stanley was selected the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division III Coach of the Year.
