Eagles Win Final Two Non-conference Matches of 2025; Defeat Hamline and Carleton

Northfield, Minn.- The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team won their final two non-conference matches of the season as they defeated Hamline University (Minn.) and Carleton College (Minn.) Saturday afternoon.

UW-La Crosse 3, Hamline University 0 (28-26, 25-23, 26-24)
  • Trailing 7-4 in the first set, UWL went on a 7-1 run to take an 11-8 lead. Hamline battled back to tie the set at 16-16 before the Eagles got kills from Bella Kottke and Maddy Wilson to lead 18-16. Back-to-back kills by Grace Bathurst and Campbell Sims for the Pipers would even the score at 21-21. A Kill by Kayla Sexton, a Piper hitting error and an assisted block by Kottke and Grace Turlais would give the Eagles a 24-21 lead. Four consecutive kills by the Pipers including two from Sophia Johnson would give Hamline a 25-24 lead. UWL would regain the lead (26-25) on kills by Sexton and Turlais before Hamline would get a kill from Sims to make it 26-26. A Turlais kill followed by a service ace from Taylor Larson would give UWL a 28-26 win in the first set.
  • The second set would start similar to the first set as UWL trailed 7-6 before going on a 4-0 run to lead 10-7. After UWL took a 15-13 lead on a kill by Sexton, Hamline scored three straight to lead 16-15. Kills by Sexton and Kottke along with a hitting error by the Pipers would give the Eagles a 20-18 lead. Johnson's kill for the Pipers would even the score at 23-23 but Grace Nommensen and Reese Yocum would record back-to-back kills to give UWL the 25-23 win. 
  • Hamline would get off to a fast start in the third set as they scored 12 of the first 17 points to lead 12-5. UWL cut their deficit to 21-15 before Hamline scored twice to make it 23-15. UWL then scored eight straight points to tie the set at 23-23 as the Eagles recorded six kills by four different players as well as got two service aces by Megan Lund. A Grace Bathurst kill would make it 24-23 Hamline; however, a kill by Wilson followed by a Megan Jasperson service ace and a hitting error by the Pipers would give UWL a 26-24 win in set three. 
FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • Sexton and Nommensen each finished with 10 kills to lead the Eagles offense.
  • Reese Yocum added nine kills while Turlais and Wilson each finished with seven.
  • The offense ran through Lund and Sydney Hoeft as they recorded 24 and 16 assists respectively.
  • Larson finished with a match high 22 digs while Jasperson added 12 and Lund had 10.

UW-La Crosse 3, Carleton College (Minn.) (25-20, 25-27, 25-21, 25-15)
  • UWL scored six of the first seven points and led 8-4 in the first set before Carleton tied it at 8-8. Two Nommensen kills and a Carleton hitting error would give the Eagles a 16-12 lead. After Carleton scored three straight point to pull with in 16-15, UWL scored five unanswered to extend lead to 21-15. Carleton would not get any closer than four (24-20) as UWL won the first set 25-20.
  • Trailing 5-3 in the second set, UWL score four straight to take a 7-5 lead. Carleton used a 5-0 run to turn a one point deficit into a 13-9 lead midway through the second set. Carleton would take a 20-16 lead before UWL went on an 8-2 run to lead 24-22. Sylvia Dixon would give the Knights a 25-24 lead with three straight kills. Turlais would tie it up for the Eagles with a kill; however, a Dixon kill and a Megan Smith ace would give the Knights a 27-25 win in set two. 
  • Both teams would trade points early on in the third set before Carleton took a 15-13 lead. UWL then scored seven straight to lead 20-15 as Sexton record four service aces during the run. Carleton would pull within 23-20 but that would be as close as they would get as UWL won the third set 25-21.
  • It was all UWL in the fourth set as they started fast by scoring six of the first seven points and extending their lead to 14-5. Carleton would not get any closer than six (16-10) as UWL won the fourth set 25-15. 
FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • UWL finished with four players in double figures in kills led by Wilson with a season high 14 kills. 
  • Joining Wilson in double figures was Sexton with 11 while Yocum and Nommensen each finished with 10. 
  • Freshman Kailyn Kurth finished with a season 26 assists to go along with nine digs for the Eagles.
  • Larson led the defense with 15 digs while Sexton added 13. 
  • The Eagles finished with 12 service aces including five by Sexton and three by Jasperson.

  • UWL stay on the road for their next match as they return to Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play and travel to Stevens Point, Wis. to take on the Pointers of UW-Stevens Point. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
