Volleyball Falls To Nationally Ranked UW-Whitewater

Whitewater, Wis.  - The University of Wisconsin La Crosse volleyball team returned to Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Wednesday night and once again faced a nationally ranked opponent as they fell to #4 ranked UW-Whitewater 3-1 on Wednesday night.

HOW DID IT HAPPEN
  • UW-Whitewater got off to a fast start in the first set as they scored the first seven points and took their largest lead of the set at 23-6. The Warhawk hit .536 and finished with 17 kills in the first set while limiting the Eagles to just six kills and a .080 hitting percentage.
  • UWL found their offense in the second set as they open with a 9-3 run. The Warhawks would cut their deficit to 14-10 before the Eagles scored seven of the next nine points. After UW-Whitewater scored the next two points, UWL recorded back-to-back assisted blocks followed by back-to-back kills to secure the second set win 25-16. Bella Kottke and Grace Nommensen paired up on the first block while Maddy Wilson and Grace Turlais recorded the second block. It was Kayla Sexton and Nommensen on the final two kills for UWL. 
  • UWL would get off to another hot start in the third set as they built an early 12-5 lead. After the Eagles took a 14-7 lead on a Turlais kill, UW-Whitewater went on a 8-1 run to tie the score at 15. The two teams would trade points until it was tie 18-18 when UW-Whitewater scored five straight to take a 23-18 lead. UWL was not able to recover from the run as UW-Whitewater took the third set 25-20.
  • Trailing 5-4 early in the fourth set, UWL went on a 7-3 run to lead 11-8. With the Eagles leading 15-12 after a service ace by Kayla Sexton, the Warhawks scored 10 of the next 12 points to take a 22-17 lead. After a Warhawk service error, UW-Whitewater scored the final three points to win the fourth set 25-18.  

FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • Nommensen and Turlais led the Eagles with nine kills each while Sexton added eight kills.
  • The offense ran through Kailyn Kurth and Megan Lund as they finished with 19 and 12 assists, respectively. 
  • Lund and Taylor Larson led the Eagles defense with 14 digs apiece. 
 UP NEXT
  • UWL will stay on the road as they travel to Northfield, Minn. to play in the St. Olaf College (Minn.) Triangular on Saturday. The Eagles will face Nebraska Wesleyan University at 3:00 p.m. followed by St. Olaf College (Minn.) at 5:00 p.m.
