UWL Defeats UW-Oshkosh in WIAC Dual; Wins Thirteen Individual Titles; Relay Sets Pool Record

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's swimming & diving team earned a 238-58 dual victory over UW-Oshkosh Saturday in the Richard L. Pein Natatorium. The Eagles improve to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) in their final home dual of the season.
 
On Senior Day, UWL won 13 individual events and swept both relays on Saturday.
 
UWL had 35 individual top-three finishes in Saturday's dual.  The Eagles' 200 medley relay of Jesse Hammes, Tyler Hartmann, Jonah Elfers and Blake Nelson finished first (1:31.68) while Hammes, Nelson, Ben Collins and Alex Starr took the 400 freestyle relay (3:12.26).

Hammes, Hartmann, Elfers and Nelson set a facility record in the 200 medley relay, breaking the record o 1:32.02 set by UWL's Alec Carlson, Marley Kaiser, Hans Hover and Ryan Jessen in 2018. 
 
Tony McNiff won the three-meter diving (293.90 points) with Aanav Patel second (224.75) and Joey Marchiando third (213.90). McNiff was second (252.10) and Patel third (231.65) in the one-meter competition.
 
The Eagles' Caleb Jondle won three individual events, finishing first in the 200 freestyle (1:51.72), 100 butterfly (54.38) and 200 I.M. (2:04.20).
 
Collins, Nelson and Vinson each won two titles. Collins won the 500 freestyle (4:58.85) and 100 breaststroke (59.21) with Nelson taking the 50 (20.65) and 100 (47.83) freestyle. Vinson captured the 200 butterfly (2:03.90) and 200 backstroke (2:04.54).
 
UWL's Davin Evans won the 1,000 freestyle (10:26.76), Hammes the 100 backstroke (54.71) and Hartmann the 200 breaststroke (2:16.09).
 
Other top-three finishes included Starr second (22.38) and Hammes third (22.39) in the 50 freestyle, Cleveland second (49.75) and Starr third (49.76) in the 100 freestyle, Cleveland second (1:52.98) in the 200 freestyle, Jonathan Pella second (5:18.67) in the 500 freestyle and Nick Ellerd second (10:58.75) in the 1,000 freestyle.
 
Sean Gillett placed second (57.36) and Nathan Gehm third (57.47) in the 100 backstroke while Gillett was second (2:06.60) with Gehm third (2:09.89) in the 200 backstroke.  Hartmann finished second (1:01.47) in the 100 breaststroke second (2:17.24) in the 200 breaststroke. Elfers finished second (56.28) and Ellerd third (56.55) in the 100 butterfly while Elfers placed third (2:04.95) in the 200 butterfly.
 
Gillett finished second (2:06.32) with Evans third (2:07.26) in the 200 I.M.
 
UWL returns to action Friday, January 24 at the UW-Stevens Point Invitational.
