Volleyball Falls To UW-River Falls in WIAC Opener

Box Score La Crosse, Wis.  - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team dropped the first two sets and was unable to comeback after winning the third set as they fell to UW-River Falls Wednesday night in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) action.

  UW-River Falls defeated UW-La Crosse 25-22, 25-17, 19-25, 25-13
Location:  Don Page Arena, River Falls, Wis.
Records: UWL 4-9 (0-1 WIAC), UW-River Falls 5-7 (1-0 WIAC)
 
HOW DID IT HAPPEN
  • In set one, the Eagles took an early 7-5 lead on a Paige Geiser kill. The Falcons then scored 10 of the next 13 points to take a 15-10 lead. UWL would score seven points in a row at one point to tie the set at 19. Unfortunately, the Falcons scored five straight and held on to win the first set 25-22. 
  • UW-River Falls jumped out to a 7-3 lead in set two and UWL would not get any closer than five points the rest of the way. 
  • The Eagles did not go away quietly as they took a 10-6 lead to start set three. UWL would extend their lead to 18-10 on four straight points before the Falcons cut their deficit to 21-17. The Eagles would force a fourth set as they scored four of the final six points to win 25-19. 
  • The Falcons would score the first five points of the fourth set and never trail. After UWL cut their deficit to 14-10, UW-River Falls scored 11 of the final 14 points to win the fourth set 25-13. 

FROM THE BOXSCORE
  • The Eagles got double digit kill nights from Gabby Johnson (16) and Reese Yocum 11. 
  • Jackie Oetterer recorded a double-double as she finished with 24 assists and 10 digs. 
  • Taylor Larson led the Eagles defense with 15 digs while Grace Nommensen finished with 10. 
  • Ava Goldsberry finished with 13 kills while Lauren Noth added 11 to lead the Falcons offense. 
  • Olivia Gustafsson had 25 assists while Noth had a team high 16 digs. 

 UP NEXT
  • UWL will finally play a home match as they host the 10 team, UW-La Crosse Invitaitonal September 20 and 21. The Eagles open the weekend playing the College of St. Scholastica (Minn.) at 1:00 p.m on Friday.
