Volleyball Loses Twice to St. Olaf and St. Norbert

Dubuque, Iowa.  - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team dropped two non-conference matches on day two of the University of Dubuque (Iowa) Invitational.

ST. OLAF COLLEGE (MINN.) 3, UW-LA CROSSE 0
  • In the first set, UWL took a 12-11 lead before St. Olaf went on a 7-2 run to take an 18-14. The Eagles would respond with a 6-0 run of their own to take a 20-18 lead. Reese Yocum sparked the run with three kills. St. Olaf scored seven of the final eight points to take the first set 25-21. 
  • St. Olaf opened the second set with a 15-5 run and never trailed. UWL would not get any closer than seven the rest of the set. 
  • St. Olaf took a 7-3 lead early in the third set before UWL cut their deficit to 8-6. St. Olaf turned their 12-10 lead to into a 19-11 lead with a 7-1 run. The Eagles would not get any closer than three the rest of the way. 
ST. NORBERT COLLEGE 3, UW-LA CROSSE 2
  • Trailing 16-14 in the first set, UWL went on a 7-1 run to take a 21-17 lead. Back-to-back kills by Yocum and a service ace from Taylor Larson to spark the run. St. Norbert cut their deficit to 21-19 but UWL scored the final four points to take the first set 25-19.
  • Back-to-back service aces by Larson would give UWL an 8-4 lead early in the second set. St. Norbert slowly chipped away and took a 20-18 lead before UWL tied it at 23 on a kill by Yocum. Maleigha Kovalaske gave St. Norbert a 24-23 lead but UWL would force a Green Knights error, a kill by Yocum and another hitting error by St. Norbert would give the Eagles the set two win 26-24.
  • A 4-0 run would give St. Norbert an 8-4 lead and they would extend that lead to 15-11. The Eagles would score three straight points including kills from Paige Geiser and Justine Bastyr to cut their deficit to 16-15. St. Norbert then scored six of the next eight points to take a 22-18 lead. After a solo block by Geiser would cut the Eagles deficit to 22-22, St. Norbert scored the final three points to take set three 25-20.
  • A 13-4 run to start the fourth set for St. Norbert helped the Green Knights even the match at two sets apiece. The Eagles would not get any closer than eight in the fourth set.
  • With the fifth set tied at four, the Green Knights used a 4-1 run to take an 8-5 lead. UWL would cut their deficit to 12-10 after a kill by Jackie Oetterer and a service ace from Ella Luoma. A kill by Grace Nommensen and an assisted by block by Oetterer and Geiser pulled the Eagles to within 13-12. The two teams would trade kills (14-13) before Kovalaske record the final point with a kill.

  • Yocum led the Eagles offense as she combined for 16 kills while Gabby Johnson added 15 kills over the two matches. 
  • Oetterer finished with 29 assists combined from the two matches.
  • The Eagles defense was led by Larson with 23 digs while Megan Jasperson had 18 digs in the two matches.

  • UWL returns to action when they travel to River Falls to play their Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener versus UW-River Falls. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
