La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team, ranked seventh on the United Soccer Coaches National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Top-25 Poll, improved to 6-0 on the season with a 2-1 victory over the University of Dubuque (Iowa) in the Eagles' home opener at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex. The Spartans fall to 3-1-1.
UWL extends its winning streak to 16 at home, improving to 31-1-3 in its last 35 home games.
The game was tied at halftime Saturday night with UWL recording 14 shots and Dubuque (Iowa) seven in the first 45:00. The Eagles had five corner kicks in the first half while the Spartans had two.
Alexis McMahon had a pair of assists in the win.
The Eagles took a 1-0 lead at 47:41 on
Jillian Sawadski's goal with assists from
Aubree Caya and
Alexis McMahon. Dubuque (Iowa) tied the game at 1-1 at 68:40 on Riley Trudeau's goal off Emma Kober's assist.
UWL regained the lead at 73:30 with Caya notching the goal off assists from McMahon and
Kate Heiderscheit.
UWL finished with 25 shots in the game, including 14 on goal. Caya registered five shots, including four on goal while McMahon finished with four shots and three on goal.
Chelsea Gale finished with three shots (one on goal) while Sawadski and Heiderscheit each had two shots in the game, both coming on goal. The Eagles totaled six corner kicks.
Summer Nicolia earned the win in goal, playing the second half and recording one save.
Erelyn Apel started in goal, finishing with four saves in the first 45:00.
Dubuque (Iowa) totaled 11 shots with six on goal. Kober finished with four shots, including three on goal. The Spartans had four corner kicks.
Karissa Cruz took the loss for Dubuque (Iowa), registering 11 saves. The Spartans also had one team save.
UWL returns to action Friday, September 20 at Calvin University (Mich.) at 5 p.m. (Central).
