UWL Extends Season Opening Winning Streak to Five with Victory at MSOE

Milwaukee, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team, ranked seventh on this week's United Soccer Coaches National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Poll, improved to 5-0 with a 4-1 win at Milwaukee School of Engineering (Wis.) Wednesday night at Viets Field. MSOE (Wis.) drops to 3-2. 

The Eagles now lead the all-time series, 5-1-1, with the Raiders. 

It marks the second straight season UWL has won at least its first five games after starting 7-0 a year ago.

UWL took a 1-0 lead on Wednesday on Chelsea Gale's goal at 17:47. The lead remained, 1-0, at halftime as UWL finished with eight shots in the first 45:00 with five on goal. The Eagles totaled six corner kicks in the first half. MSOE (Wis.) recorded seven shots in the opening half with four on goal. The Raiders had two corner kicks.

Lindsey Szymanski extended the Eagles' lead to 2-0 at 54:20, but the Raiders cut it to 2-1 at 62:48 on a Grace Quinn goal. UWL quickly took a two-goal lead against 66:16 on Amaya Thesing's goal. Ellie Behnke finished the scoring for UWL on an Ellie Arndt assist at 77:03 for the final margin fof 4-1.

UWL finished with 13 shots with nine shots on goal. Szymanski led the team with three shots, all coming on goal. Gale and Behnke finished with two shots, one on goal. Sophia Anger earned the win in goal, recording six saves. UWL finished with nine corner kicks.

MSOE (Wis.) had 11 shots, including seven on goal. Jackie Keane finished with three shots with two on goal while Addison Spilman had two shots, both on goal. Page Sanchez finished with five saves.

UWL returns to action Saturday, September 14 hosting the University of Dubuque (Iowa) in the Eagles' home opener. Start time is set for 5 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex.
