La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse extended its winning streak to eight with a pair of shutouts over UW-Platteville Saturday afternoon at North Campus Field. The Eagles took the opener, 2-0, and the nightcap, 5-0, in the regular season finale for both teams. UWL improves to 23-17 overall and 9-5 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while UW-Platteville drops to 22-16 overall and 2-12 in the conference.
Elise Weinzierl (9-5) coming off a perfect game at UW-Stout on May 1, earned the complete-game shutout in Saturday's opener. She went 7.0 innings, allowing four hits with 11 strikeouts. Dating back to her start versus 22nd-ranked UW-Whitewater on April 27, Weinzierl had retired 28 consecutive hitters until UW-Platteville's Taylor Roughen's two-out double in the top of the third. Â
Brooke Howard scored three runs Saturday.
UWL took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as
Brooke Howard led-off with a single and advanced to second on
Cristin Casey's sacrifice bunt. Howard went to third on a passed ball and scored on
Kyra Lard's sacrifice fly.Â

in the doubleheader.
UW-Platteville got a pair of hits and another runner reached on an error in the top of the fifth, but Weinzierl recorded a strikeout to strand the bases loaded.Â
The Eagles added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth. Pinch-hitter
Lauren Winkler singled and replaced by pinch runner
Lindsay Steien. Howard reached on a UW-Platteville fielding error with Steien advancing to second. Casey singled, but Steien was out after rounding third to far. Lard followed with an RBI single to knock in Howard with an unearned run.Â
Weinzierl recorded a pair of strikeouts in the top of the seventh to secure the win. UWL finished with five hits as Casey went 2-for-2. Lard had both RBI while Howard scored both runs.Â
Roughen (14-8) suffered the loss for UW-Platteville. She pitched a complete-game, going 6.0 innings, allowing five hits and two runs (one earned) with six strikeouts. Four different players registered a hit for the Pioneers.Â
Remington Stark and
Ally Eden combined on a five-hit shutout in the second game. Stark (11-3) earned the win, pitching 5.0 innings, allowing three hits while striking out five. Eden went 2.0 innings, allowing two hits with one strikeout. Â
Anna Jensen went 2-for-2 in the nightcap.
The Eagles tallied four runs on five hits in the bottom of the third.
Anna Jensen led-off with a single and went to second on Steien's sacrifice bunt. Howard's single to left field scored Jensen with the game's first run. Casey followed with a single and Howard and Casey both moved into scoring position on a passed ball. Lard's RBI ground out scored Howard for a 2-0 lead.
Jordyn McCormack and
Abbey Bosch followed with back-to-back doubles to make it 4-0.Â
UWL extended the lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the fourth as
Joette Kassa scored on Steien's double play.Â

Carlie Jo Brownlee (6-8) took the loss for UW-Platteville. She went 2.2 innings, allowing seven hits and four runs while striking out three. The Pioneers recorded five hits with Danielle Trumbo going 2-for-3.
UWL returns to action Thursday, May 9 at the WIAC Tournament (presented by Culver's) at UW-Oshkosh.Â
