Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader with UW-Eau Claire; Seaman and Born Hit Home Runs

Eau Claire, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team swept a doubleheader with UW-Eau Claire on Friday afternoon at Carson Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED
   
Game One 
  • The Blugolds scored first as they got a run on one hit and one error in the bottom of the first inning.
  • UWL would get on the board in the third inning as they scored five runs on seven hits. Brady Burrill led off with a single and stole second base before advancing to third on a wild pitch. Tim Urlaub then singled to score Burrill and tie the game at one. After reaching on a fielders choice, Jack Moran stole second and moved to third on a fly out. Chris VandenHeuvel would score Moran with a single, steal second base and score on a single by Mac Born. George Seaman then hit his team leading 12th home run of the season to give UWL a 5-1 lead.
  • A VandenHeuvel single would score Nate Witte in the fourth inning to extend UWL's lead to 6-1.
  • Sacrifice fly outs by Burrill and Urlaub in the fifth inning put UWL up 8-1. 
  • UWL would add two more runs in the sixth and one run in the seventh to finish the scoring for the Eagles. 
    Game Two
  • A bases loaded single by Jack Olver would score Nate Witte in the top of the first inning to give UWL the early 1-0 lead.
  • Moran singled in the second inning, stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error. Witte then grounded out to third which allowed Moran to score and make it 2-0 UWL. 
  • The Eagles added three more on five hits in the third inning to lead 5-0. Born led off with 11th home run of the season while Calvin Hargrove and Moran each drove in a run with a single.
  • UW-Eau Claire would score two runs (one earned) in the fourth inning on a fielders choice and a fielding error.
  • UWL would pull away in the fifth inning as they scored five runs on four hits and three errors. All five runs were scored after there was two outs.

FROM THE BOX SCORE
   
Game One
  • Offensively, UWL finished with 11 runs on 13 hits and six walks..
  • VandenHeuvel was one of three Eagles to finish with multiple hits as he was 2-for-3 with a walk, two RBIs and two runs scored.
  • Also finishing with multiple hits was Olver (3-for-3) and Urlaub (2-for-3). Urlaub also drove in two runs and scored a run while Olver scored a run. 
  • Seaman was 1-for-3 with a home run, a walk, three RBIs and two runs scored. 
  • Tyler Schmitt (3-2) earned the win for the Eagles as he allowed one run on four hits and one walk while striking out 12 in 6.0 innings of work. 
  • Nich Meuser (2-4) suffered the loss for the Blugolds as he allowed eight runs on nine hits and three walks while striking out three in 4.0 innings. 
      Game Two
  • The Eagles finished game two with 10 runs on 15 hits and two walks.
  • Seven Eagles finished with two hits including Witte, Born, Pye, Olver, Hargrove, Burrill and Moran. 
  • Born and Witte each drove in two runs while Moran, Pye and Witte each scored two runs. 
  • Owen Deprez (5-0) picked up the win for the Eagles as he went 6.0 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on one hit and six walks while striking out seven. Chayce Osterhaus pitched the final three innings and struck out five of the nine batters he faced.
  • Ty Schafer (0-1) earned the loss by allowing nine runs (four earned) on 11 hits and one walk while striking out five in 4.2 innings.
