Eagles Force A Decisive NCAA III Regional Championship

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team forced a second championship game in the National Collegiate Athletic Assocition (NCAA) III Regional with an 18-11 win over Coe College (Iowa) at Copeland Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Nate Witte and Chris VandenHeuvel led off the first inning with back-to-back walks. Then with two outs, Anthony Vivian reached on a throwing error that scored Witte from second to make it 1-0.
  • In the third inning, UWL scored seven runs on five hits and three walks. Mac Born walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Vivian's double with one out. Jack Olver then singled to score Vivian and moved to second when Andrew Rajkovich walked. Tim Urlaub's single loaded the bases for UWL while Jack Moran's single scored Olver to put UWL up 4-0. Then with two outs, VandenHeuvel walked to force in Rajkovich. Born was then hit by a pitch which scored Urlaub while Seaman's single scored both Moran and VandenHeuvel to make it 8-0.
  • Witte would hit one off the scoreboard in left center which brought in Rajkovich who had walked earlier to lead off the fourth inning. After VandenHeuvel walked and stole second base, Born singled to left to score VandenHeuvel and put UWL up 11-0. UWL would add a run in the fifth inning as Rajkovich, who walked for the fourth time in four plate appearances, scored on a wild pitch.
  • After Born led off the sixth inning with a single, Vivian hit his fourth home of the regional to extend the Eagles lead to 14-0.Then with two outs, Rajkovic walked for the fifth time, advanced to second on a balk and then scored on a single by Urlaub. 
  • Coe College would get on the scoreboard in the sixth inning with five runs. Mitchell Eckardt led off with a walk followed by a Jon Wille walk. Jake Brosius then doubled to Eckardt while Tyce Johnson singled to score Wille. Ryan Thoreson would then hit a home run to right center to score Brosius and Johnson and cut the Kohawks deficit to 15-5. 
  • A two run home run by Seaman in the seventh inning extends UWL's lead to 17-5. After the Eagles loaded the bases, Calvin Hargrove would hit a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 18-5.
  • In the eighth inning, Kaden Haller walked and advanced to second on Creighton Kreshel's single with one out. Austin Gomez then singled to score Haller while Mitchell Eckardt's single scored Kreshel to cut the Kohawks deficit to 18-7. Coe would then score four more runs in the ninth inning on five hits. James Van Hooser, Haller, Kreshel and Eckardt each drove in a run for the Kohawks.

FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • Offensively, UWL finished with 18 runs on 15 hits and 15 walks. The 15 walks is the second most in a game by the Eagles all-time. 
  • Vivian (3-for-6) and Urlaub (3-for-5) led the Eagles offensively with three hits. Vivian also had three RBIs and three runs scored. 
  • Rajkovich finished with a single game Eagle record six walks and scored four runs. 
  •  Alex Redman (3-3) earned the win going 5.0 innings and allowing five runs on six hits and four walks with three strikeouts. Jake Clauson (1) earned his first save of the season as pitched the final four innings for the Eagles.
  • The Kohawks finished with 11 runs on 15 hits and seven walks.
  • Johnson (3-2) suffered the loss for the Kohawks as he allowed six runs on three hits and five walks while striking out three in 2.1 innings of work.
  • Brosius (3-for-5, one RBI, two runs) and Thoreson (2-for-3, three RBI, one run) led the Kohawks offense.
