Menomonie, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team extended its winning streak to six games with a doubleheader sweep at UW-Stout Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field. The Eagles took the opener, 8-0 in six innings, and the nightcap, 6-2.
UWL improves to 21-17 overall and 7-5 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while UW-Stout drops to 21-16 overall and 6-6 in the conference.
Elise Weinzierl pitched a perfect game for UWL in the opener, retiring 18 straight batters. She finished with six strikeouts. It is the 11th no-hitter in school history and second this season. UWL earned a 4-1 victory over St. Olaf College (Minn.) on March 2 as
Madi Lee (2.0 IP),
Remington Stark (1.2) and
Brynne Bieri (3.1) combined for the no-hitter.
It is the second perfect game in UWL history.
Karen Sennert pitched a perfect game at Viterbo University (Wis.) on April 1, 2003 in a 15-0 victory in 5.0 innings.
UWL scored a pair of runs in the first and second innings on Wednesday.
Brooke Howard led-off the game with a triple and scored on
Kyra Lard's two-run home run in the top of the first. In the second,
Lindsay Steien doubled with two outs and came in on Howard's single up the middle. Howard stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on
Cristin Casey's single.
Brooke Howard had six hits in the doubleheader.
The Eagles added to their lead with a run in the third to make it 5-0.
Abbey Bosch scored on
Anna Jensen's two-out single. UWL finished the scoring with three runs in the sixth on RBI singles from Steien, Howard and Lard.
UWL finished with 14 hits as Howard went 4-for-4 with three runs and two RBI. Steien finished 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI while Casey and Lard both went 2-for-4. Lard scored once and had a team-high three RBI while Casey added an RBI
Mackenzie Wolterstorff (11-10) took the loss for UW-Stout, pitching 2.2 innings, allowing seven hits, five runs and two walks with four strikeouts.
Remington Stark (10-3) earned the complete-game victory in the nightcap, going 7.0 innings, allowing eight hits, two runs and two walks with eight strikeouts. The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Casey reached on an error with one out, stole second and scored on Lard's single.
Lindsay Steien finished 5-for-6 on Wednesday.
UW-Stout tied the game in the bottom of the second. Alexa Anderson and Abbey Dusterhof had bunt singles with one out and stole second and third. Katelyn Belleau's bunt single scored Anderson, but the Blue Devils stranded two runners.
UWL took a 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth. Howard singled with one out and advanced to second on Casey's sacrifice bunt. Lard reached on an error. Lard then stole second and Howard came in on a UW-Stout throwing error to make it 2-1.
Jordyn McCormack followed with a single to knock in Lard.
The Blue Devils cut it 3-2 with a run in the bottom of the fifth. Sammy Noreen scored on Payton Dolecki's two-out double. The Eagles extended the lead to 6-2 with three runs in the sixth. Howard delivered a two-run single and Casey an RBI double in the inning.
UWL totaled nine hits as Howard finished 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI and Steien went 2-for-3 with a run.
Anna Blanford (7-5) suffered the loss for UW-Stout. She pitched 5.2 innings, allowing eight hits, six runs (three earned) and one walk while striking out seven. The Blue Devils had eight hits as Stephanie Kuhn went 2-for-3.
Remington Stark earned the win in the nightcap.
UWL returns to action Saturday, May 4 hosting UW-Platteville at 2 p.m. at North Campus Field in the regular-season finale.
