Baseball Splits Doubleheader With UW-Stevens Point; Schmitt Earns Win in Game 2

Stevens Point, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team split a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader with UW-Stevens Point Friday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
   
Game One 
  • The Pointers scored first with two runs on two hits and two errors in the bottom of the first inning. 
  • UW-Stevens Point extended their lead to 5-0 with three runs in the second inning. An RBI single from Jakob Boos, rbi double by Bradley Comer and an RBI single by Matt Baumann accounted for the second inning runs.
  • The Eagles would finally get a run as Brady Burrill singled with one out and advanced to third on a double by Jack Moran. Burrill would then score on a wild pitch to cut the Eagles deficit to 5-1 in the third inning.
  • The score remained that way until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Pointers scored six runs on five hits and an error. Trent Van Ess and Connor Olson each drove in two of the runs for UW-Stevens Point.
    Game Two
  • UWL wasted no time in game two as they scored six runs on six hits and an error in the first inning. Moran led off the game with a single and moved to second on a bunt single by Nate Witte. Moran and Witte moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt by Mac Born. A sacrifice fly by Jack Olver scored Moran for the Eagles first run while Andrew Rajkovich's single scored Witte. Emiliano Ramos would then move Rajkovich to second with a single and they both moved up a base when Burrill reached on a fielding error. Calvin Hargrove then doubled to score both Burrill and Ramos while Chris VandenHeuvel's single scored Hargrove. 
  • After Witte led off the second inning with a double, Born singled to score Witte to extend UWL's lead to 7-0.
  • The Pointers would put two runs on the scoreboard in the third inning on back-to-back RBI singles from Comer and Baumann to make it 7-2.
  • In the bottom of the fifth inning, UW-Stevens Point cut their deficit to 7-4 on a 2-run scoring single by Van Ess.
  • UWL would get one of those runs back in the sixth inning as Witte singled with one out and advanced to second on a ground out by Born. Olver then reached on a fielding error which allowed Witte to score from second base to give UWL an 8-4 lead.

FROM THE BOX SCORE
   
Game One
  • Offensively, UWL finished with one run on four hits.
  • Moran finished 2-for-2 while Burrill was 1-for-2 with a run scored.
  • Isaiah Katz (5-4) suffered the loss for the Eagles as he allowed eight runs (seven earned) on 10 hits and one walk while striking out two in 5.1 innings of work.
  • Nick Paulsen (3-1) earned the win for the Pointers as he allowed one run on four hits while striking out 10. 
  • Boos led the Pointers finishing 3-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI while Comer was 1-for 2 with two walks, two runs scored and an RBI.
      Game Two
  • The Eagles finished game two with eight runs on 14 hits and one walk
  • Witte led the Eagle offense going 4-for-5 with a double and three runs scored.
  • Also finishing with multiple hits was Rajkovich (2-5) and VandenHeuvel (3-for-5) while Hargrove was 1-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored. 
  • Tyler Schmitt (2-2) earned the win for the Eagles going 5.1 innings and giving up four runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out eight. Caleb Matl (4) picked up the save by going the final 3.2 innings and allowing three hits and three walks while striking out four.
  • The Pointers had four runs on 10 hits and six walks. 
  • Boos, Comer and Baumann each finished with two hits apiece. 
  • Kenny Schultz (4-2) suffered the loss for the Pointers as he allowed seven runs (three earned) on 10 hits while striking out two.
