Baseball Defeats WashU Twice; Eagles Record 28 Hits For the Day

St. Louis, Mo. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team earned two wins on Saturday afternoon as they defeated Washington University in St. Louis 8-4 and 16-13.

HOW IT HAPPENED
   
Game One
  • The game entered the fourth inning scoreless when the Bears scored two runs on one hit. 
  • The Eagles scored six runs on four hits in the sixth inning. Mac Born drove in two runs with a single while Nate Witte's bases loaded clearing single to give the Eagles a 6-2 lead. 
  • UWL added two runs (8-2) in the seventh inning as Brady Burrill drove in a run with a sacrifice fly while a second run scored on a throwing error on the play. 
  • Shane Pellegrino drove in two runs for the Bears in the eighth inning to cut WashU's deficit to 8-4 after eight innings. 
    Game Two
  • UWL got on the scoreboard during their first at bat as they scored three runs in the first inning. With one out, Witte walked and advanced to second on a single by Anthony Vivian. Witte then scored on a single by George Seaman. Born's single then scored both Vivian and Seaman to put UWL up 3-0. 
  • Witte would walk to lead of the fifth and advance to third on a double by Jack Olver. After a pitching change, Vivian walked to load the bases. Seaman than singled to score Witte while Born walked to force Olver in to give UWL a 5-0 lead. 
  • The Bears would tie the game at 5 in the bottom half of the fifth inning as they scored five runs on three hits and five walks. 
  • UWL responded with six of their own runs in the sixth inning to regain the lead at 11-5. Olver drove in a run with a single, Seaman scored two runs with a single while Born plated three runs with his third home run of the season.
  • WashU scored a run in the bottom of the sixth and then four more in the seventh to cut their deficit to 11-10. 
  • In the eighth inning, UWL extended their lead to 16-10 by scoring five runs on five hits and two errors. Born would drive in his seventh run of the game for the first run of the inning while Burrill tripled to score two more runs and eventually scored on the play himself after a throwing error. Jack Moran singled, stole second base and scored when Olver reached on a throwing error.
  • The Bears would not go away quietly though as they scored three runs on three hits. WashU would get two RBI double from Kaden Bernhard and an RBI single from Pellegrino.

Game One
  • Offensively, UWL finished with eight runs on eight hits and five walks.
  • Vivian led the Eagles going 2-for-3 with a walk and run scored. Also finishing with two hits was Olver. 
  • Born finished 1-for-2 with a walk, 2 RBI and a run scored. 
  • Tucker Bouche (1-0) came on in relief to earn the win as he went 1.2 innings, allowing no runs and no hits while striking out one. Owen Deprez (1) picked up the save by pitching the final 4.0 innings, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out four. 
  • Shane Pellegrino led the Bears offense by going 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs and 2 walks.
  • Hank Weiss (2-1) suffered the loss on the mound for the Bears by giving up five runs on three hits and a walk. 
      Game Two
  • Offensively, UWL finished with 16 runs on 19 hits and six walks.
  • The Eagles 4-6 hitters went a combine 13-for-16 with 11 RBIs and eight runs scored. Vivian was 4-for5, Seaman 5-for-6 and Born 4-for-5. 
  • Born hit his third home run of the season and finished with seven RBIs. The RBI total is the third most in a single game for an Eagle. 
  • Mitchel Fassbender (2-0) came on in relief to earn the win by going 1.2 innings and allowing three runs on three hits and three walks while striking out two.  Caleb Matl pitched the final three innings to earn his first save of the season. In three innnings of work, Matl gave up five runs (four earned) on seven hits and two waks while striking out two.
  • Owen Block (0-2) suffered the loss for the Bears as he came on in relief to pitch 1.1 innings, allowing five runs on four hits and three walks while striking out one. 
  • Pellegrino, Brandon Buday, Evan Minarovic, Bernhard and Zac Malis each finished with two hits as the Bears as a team recorded 14 hits and 13 walks.
