Ten Run Third Inning Leads UWL Past Western New England

Davenport, Fla.. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team earned a 14-12 win over Western New England (Mass.) Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Golden Bears scored twice in the first inning as they got back-to-back RBI singles.
  • UWL would get a run back in the top of the second as Anthony Vivian led off with a single, advanced to second on a ground out and reached third when Cam Dupont reached via a hit by pitch. Chris VandenHeuvel then drove Vivian in with a single.
  • A two RBI double by Cody Waterbury would give the Golden Bears a 4-1 lead after two innings. 
  • UWL would then explode for 10 runs on six hits and two errors to take an 11-4 lead. Nate Witte led off with a single and advanced to second on a single by Mac Born. Both Born and Witte advance on a wild pitch followed by Jack Olver reaching via a walk. Vivian then drove in both Witte and Born with a single. Olver scored on a Wild pitch while Vandenheuvel drove in a run to make it 6-4. Jack Moran drove in two with a double while Olver hit a two run home run for the final runs of the inning. 
  • Western New England cut their deficit to 11-9 by scoring five runs on three hits in the bottom half of the third inning. 
  • In the sixth inning, Dupont doubled and scored on a triple by VandenHeuvel who then scored when Moran reached on a fielding error. 
  • Henry Schowerer homered to start the bottom of the seventh while Kohtaro Shimada drove in a run to make the score 13-11.  
  • Witte would give the Eagles a 14-11 lead in the eighth inning when he singled to score VandenHeuvel who reached via a walk.
  • In the bottom half of the eighth inning, Schowerer would hit his second home run of the game to make it 14-12. 

FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • Offensively, UWL finished with 14 hits and five walks along with four stolen bases.
  •  VandenHeuvel finished 3-for-4 with a triple, three RBIs, 3 runs scored and a stolen base.
  • Witte also recorded three hits and a walk as well as a stolen base, RBI and run scored.
  • Also finishing with multi hit games was Moran (2) and Olver (2).
  • Caleb Matl (1-0) came on in relief to earn the win allowing one run on two hits and three walks while striking out four. Tucker Bouche (1) picked up the save going 2.2 innings and allowing one run on two hits and a walk while striking out six. 
  • Matt Lauria (0-1) suffered the loss for the Golden Bears as he allowed eight runs on six hits and three walks in 2.1 innings. 
  • Shimada finished 4-for-4 and two walks to go along with three RBI and two runs scored.
