Baseball Opens 2024 Season With WIn Over Bethel; Born and Vivian Homer

Davenport, Fla. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team opened its 2024 season with an 8-3 win over Bethel University (Minn.) Monday afternoon at NE Regional Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Bethel scored first as Xavier Lortie hit a two run home run in the top of the first inning. 
  • UWL would get one of those runs back in the bottom of the first as Nate Witte led off with a walk and stole second base. Witte then stole third base before being driven into score on a single by George Seaman.
  • Bethel extended their lead to 3-1 on an RBI single by Nolan Jurgenson to score Matthew Carlsen.
  • The Eagles would score a run in the fourth, fifth and sixth inning to take a 4-3 lead. In the fourth, Logan Pye singled and advanced to second on a single from Tim Urlaub. Chris VandenHeuvel then drove Pye in for the Eagles second run of the game. Then in the fifth, Mac Born hit his first home run of the season to tie the game at 3. Anthony Vivian would lead off the sixth inning with a double and would score on VandenHeuvel run scoring single. 
  • In the eighth inning, the Eagles would score four insurance runs as Seaman led off with a double and scored on Vivian's first home run of the year. VandenHeuvel would reach on a fielders choice which Urlaub was out on the play before stealing both second and third base. Jack Moran walked and advanced to second when Witte walked which loaded the bases. Born then drove in two runs with a single of his own to make it 8-3.

FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • Offensively, UWL finished with eight runs on 15 hits. Six UWL players finished with at least two hits including Witte (3-for-4) and Urlaub (3-for-4). Witte also walked and scored a run for the Eagles.
  • Born finished 2-for-4 with a walk, three runs batted in (RBI), a run scored and a home run.
  • Vivian also homered for the Eagles as he went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
  • Also finishing with multi-hit games was Seaman (2-for-4) and VandenHeuvel (2-for-4). 
  • Owen Anderson (1-0) picked up the win on the mound for the Eagles by allowing three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out six in 6.0 innings of work.
  • Alex Redman (1) came on in relief to earn the save by pitching three scoreless innings and allowing just two hits while striking out one.
  • Jordan Krupke suffered the loss for the Royals as he allowed four runs on 10 hits, one walk and two strikeouts in six innings of work. 
  • Carlsen led the Royals going 2-for-4 with a run scored while Lortie was 1-for-3 with a home run, run scored and two RBIs.
