Balanced Scoring Leads to Road Win at UW-Stevens Point; UWL Sweeps Season Series

Stevens Point, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team earned a 79-61 victory at UW-Stevens Point Saturday night in Quandt Fieldhouse. The Eagles improve to 12-9 overall and 6-4 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Pointers drop to 11-10 overall and 5-5 in the conference.

UWL has won the last 12 meetings with UW-Stevens Point, sweeping this year's regular-season meetings after a 86-84 double overtime win over UW-Stevens Point on January 6 in La Crosse. 

The Pointers took a 2-0 lead on a Cal Krohn layup, but JJ Paider's layup and Torin Hannah's three-pointer gave the Eagles a 5-2 lead. UWL would never trail the rest of the game. The Eagles led, 11-9, when Dustin Derousseau connected on a three-pointer and Khris Green a jumper to give UWL a 16-9 advantage.

Khris Green finished with 12 points, five assists and three steals.


UWL took a 19-11 lead with 13:49 left on a Will Fuhrmann three-pointer. Malik Abdul-Wahid's layup cut the deficit to 22-15, but a Green jumper and Jake Grosse three-point field goal extended UWL's lead to 27-15. The Eagles took their largest lead of the first half at 41-23 with 2:28 remaining on a Green layup. UWL led, 46-30, at halftime after Fuhrmann's three-point field goal with :11 left. 

UW-Stevens Point could get no closer than 14 points in the second half as UWL led by as many as 25.

UWL shot 50.8% from the field on Saturday, including 57.1% (12-of-21) from three-point range, and 50.0% (seven-of-14) at the free throw line. The Eagles shot 62.1% (18-of-29) from the field in the first half, including 90.0% (nine-of-10) from three-point range. 

Six players scored in double figures for UWL with Fuhrmann finishing with a team-high 17 points. He was six-of-nine from the field, including five-of-five from three-point range. Fuhrmann added six rebounds. Austin Westra finished with 13 points and Gross 11 off the bench or the Eagles. Green totaled 12 points while Derousseau and Hannah each had 11. Derousseau had a team-high seven rebounds while tying for the team lead with five assists with Green, who had a team-high three steals.

UW-Stevens Point shot 43.9% from the field, including 33.3% (five-of-15) from three-point range, and 85.7% (six-of-seven) at the line. Abdul-Wahid led the Pointers with 12 points while Darrius Bolden finished with 10. 

UWL returns to action Wednesday, February 7 at UW-Stout at 7 p.m.
