UWL Falls to UW-Oshkosh in WIAC Semifinals; Schumann Leads Eagles with 17 points

Oshkosh, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team had their season come to an end on Wednesday night as they fell to top seeded UW-Oshkosh in the semifinals of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament (presented by Culvers).

THE BASICS 
Final Score: #1 seed UW-Oshkosh 77, 
#5 seed UW-La Crosse 52
Location: Kolf Sports Center, Oshkosh, Wis. 
Regular season: The Titans won the WIAC regular season by finishing 21-4 overall and 12-2 in conference play. UW-Oshkosh defeated UWL 68-56 on January 17 in La Crosse. Then in Oshkosh, the Titans defeated the Eagles 64-55. 
National Rankings: UW-Oshkosh is ranked 14th on this weeks D3hoops.com Top-25 poll. 
Records: UWL ends the season 13-14 overall, UW-Oshkosh improves to 22-4 overall and advances to play #3 seed UW-Stout on Friday night. 

                
HOW DID IT HAPPEN
  • With UWL leading 6-4, UW-Oshkosh goes on a 14-3 run over final 3:24 of first quarter. Kailee Meeker hit a three-pointer with :07 left to stop the Titans run. 
  • Ali Sprangers opened the second quarter with a three-pointer for the Ealges while Paige Schumann hit a jumper to cut their deficit to 21-14. The Titans would then score 19 of the next 26 points to take its largest lead of the half at 40-20 with :50 left. A Schumann three-pointer with :39 left would make it 40-23 which was the halftime score. 
  • The Eagles used an 8-2 run to cut their deficit to 42-31 with 5:48 left in the third quarter. Sprangers and Schumann each hit a three-pointer while Lauryn Milne hit a layup to spark the early quarter run. With the Titans leading 48-35 (3:37), UW-Oshkosh closes quarter by scoring four of final six points to lead 52-36 after three quarters.
  • UW-Oshkosh put the game out of reach as they opened the fourth quarter on a 14-4 run to take a 66-40 lead with 5:39 left in the game. The Eagles would not get any closer than 22 (70-48, 3:28) the rest of the way. 
     
FROM THE BOXSCORE
  • UWL was led by Schumann with 17 points, three rebounds and two assists.
  • Milne joined Schumann in double figures with 12 points to go along with a team high six rebounds. 
  • As a team, the Eagles shot 18-of-48 (37.5%) from the floor including seven-of-17 (41.2%) from the three-point line. UWL was also nine-of-13 (69.2%) from the free throw line.
  • Kayce Faile led four Titans in double figures with 17 points and a game high 13 rebounds. Mackenzie Tlachac chipped in 15 points while Kennedy Osterman add 12 and Bridget Froehlke 11. 
  • UW-Oshkosh finished the game 32-of-62 (51.6%) from the floor including four-of-13 (30.8%) from the three-point line. The Titans were also nine-of-10 (90%) from the free throw line.
