UWL Never Trails in Second Half in Home Win over UW-Whitewater; Four Players in Double Figures

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team completed a regular-season sweep of UW-Whitewater with a 83-68 victory Saturday night in Mitchell Hall. The Eagles improve to 13-10 overall and 7-5 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Warhawks drop to 17-6 overall and 7-5 in the conference.

UWL earned a 85-75 win at UW-Whitewater on January 24. It marks the Eagles' second regular-season sweep of the Warhawks in the last three years.

UW-Whitewater, receiving votes on this week's D3hoops.com Top-25 Poll, raced out to an 11-4 lead on Saturday on a Miles Barnstable three-pointer with 16:32 remaining. The Warhawks took their largest lead of the game at 21-12 with 12:48 left on Elijah Lambert's three-point play. Trevon Chislom's jumper gave UW-Whitewater a 24-18 lead, but UWL used a 8-0 run to take a 26-24 advantage with 9:45 remaining on Vince Vandervest jumper.  

James Barker's three-point field goal with 8:52 left gave UW-Whitewater a 29-28 lead, but UWL went on a 7-0 run to take a 35-29 lead with 5:37 remaining on a pair of JJ Paider free throws. The Eagles led, 39-36, at halftime.

UWL never trailed in the second half. Leading 47-46, Jake Gross' jumper and Will Fuhrmann's two free throws gave the Eagles a 51-46 advantage. UW-Whitewater would get no closer than three points the rest of the game. Paider's two free throws provided UWL with a 57-48 lead with 13:06 left. Khris Green's three-pointer with 10:05 remaining gave UWL a 63-50 lead. The Eagles took their largest lead at 69-52 with 8:07 remaining on two Dustin Derousseau free throws. 

The Warhawks cut the lead to 72-63 with 5:28 remaining on a Miles Barnstable jumper, but four straight points from Derousseau extended the Eagles' lead to 76-63. 

UWL shot 52.0% from the field, including 30.8% (four-of-13) from three-point range, and 75.0% (27-of-36) at the free throw line. The 27 free throws made and 36 attempts are both season-highs. The 27 free throws made are the most since making 28 against UW-Whitewater on January 26, 2019. The 36 attempts are the most for UWL since finishing with 37 against Augustana College (Ill.) on December 13, 2016. 

Paider led four players in double figures with 19 points, going six-of-nine from the field and seven-of-nine at the line. He also had a game 12 rebounds and three steals. Green finished with 17 points, four rebounds and three assists on Saturday, going five-of-seven from the field, including two-of-two from three-point range, and six-of-nine at the line. Fuhrmann totaled 16 points and Derousseau 13.

UW-Whitewater shot 44.3% from the field, including 30.4% (seven-of-23) from three-point range, and 58.3% (seven-of-12) at the line. Miles Barnstable led the Warhawks with a game-high 20 points. Chislom and Devlin Barnstable each totaled 13 points while Barker finished with 12. 

UWL returns to action Wednesday, February 14 hosting UW-Oshkosh at 7 p.m. in the regular-season home finale.
