Eagles Comeback Bid Comes Up Short As They Fall to Carroll

Waukesha, Wis.  - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team dropped the first two sets to Carroll University (Wis.) but won the next two to force a fifth set which came up short as the Eagles fell 3-2.

HOW DID IT HAPPEN
  • The first set saw the Eagles lead for most of the way as they took a 20-15 lead late. Carroll would then go on an 8-1 run to take a 23-21 lead and UWL would not be able to recover as the Pioneers won the first set 25-22. 
  • The Pioneers would hit .324 in the second set to help them pull away easily as they won set two 25-7. UWL was limited to just three kills in the set. 
  • Trailing 10-9 in the third set, UWL scored seven of the next nine points to lead 16-12. The Pioneers would pull within 17-15 but the Eagles would score four straight points and not allow the Pioneers any closer than two (24-22) the rest of the way. 
  • After a slow start in the fourth set, UWL used a 5-0 run to turn a one point deficit into a 10-7 lead. The Eagles would extend their lead to 17-11 before the Pioneers would make a run to cut it to 18-15. UWL quickly extended their lead back to seven (22-15) and force a fifth set by taking the fourth set 25-20. 
  • The Pioneers would use a 7-0 run in the fifth set to pull away as they limited the Eagles to just four points in the decisive set. 

FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • As a team, the Eagles hit .074 and were led offensively by Gabby Johnson with 10 kills while Grace Turlais finished with nine. 
  • Jackie Oetterer and Hally Holker split setting duties with Oetterer finishing with 21 and Holker adding 11.
  • Defensively, the Eagles were led by Taylor Larson with 21 digs and Grace Nommensen added13.
  • Carroll finished the match hitting .176 and were led offensively by Peyton Frost who finished with 14 kills. 
  • Defensively, the Pioneers were led by Maggie McGough as she had a match high 23 digs.

  • UWL will return home for the final match of the 2024 season on Friday, November 8 when they host UW-Eau Claire at 7 p.m.
