Northfield, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's cross country captured the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III North Regional title Saturday afternoon at Bill Huyck Championship Course. The Eagles finished with 41 team points while UW-Whitewater was second with 81. St. Olaf College (Minn.) placed third with 90.
With the regional victory, UWL earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championships scheduled for Saturday, November 23 in Terre Haute, Indiana.
It is UWL's seventh (2001, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2023, 2024) NCAA Division III Regional title in school history.
UW-Stevens Point placed fourth (163) in Saturday's NCAA Division III Regional while UW-Eau Claire was fifth (183). Carthage College (Wis.) finished sixth (189), UW-Stout seventh (218), MSOE (Wis.) eighth (234), UW-Platteville ninth (241) and Carleton College (Minn.) 10th (291). A total of 31 teams competed.
Carleton (Minn.) served as host of the regional championships.
All seven of UWL's runners earned NCAA III All-Region accolades with top-35 finishes. The Eagles'
Aidan Matthai was second overall, completing the 8,000-meter course in 24:30.3. UWL's
Grant Matthai finished third (24:30.3) with
Jayden Zywicki 10th (24:45.4).
Joey Sullivan placed 11th overall (24:45.6) with
Corey Fairchild 14th (24:54.8),
Elias Ritzke 20th (25:01.8) and
Mason Brown 33rd (25:16.0).
Mohammed Bati of Augsburg (Minn.) won the individual title with a time of 24:20.6. A total of 222 runners completed the race.
The NCAA Division III Championships are set for 10 a.m. (Central) on Saturday, November 23 at LaVern Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute, Indiana.
