Eagles Comeback Falls Short as They Lose to The University of Dubuque

Dubuque, Iowa  - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team fell behind 2-1 but battled back to force a fifth set before falling to the University of Dubque (Iowa) Saturday afternoon 3-2.

HOW DID IT HAPPEN
  • Dubuque got off to a fast start in the first set as they built an early 12-4 lead. UWL slowly chipped away at their deficit and eventually took a 17-16 lead on a service ace by Ella Luoma. The two teams would trade points back and forth until the Eagles scored the final three points in a row to win the first set 25-23. Paige Geiser recorded the final two points of the set with back-to-back kills.
  • After the Spartans of Dubuque scored three points in a row to take a 9-6 lead, UWL scored seven of the next eight points to take a 10-6 lead. The Eagles then scored seven of the next eight point to take a 13-10 lead. The second set would be tied multiple times throughout when UWL took a 22-21 lead. After Dubuque tied it up at 22, The Eagles got a kill from Geiser followed by a Spartans error to give the Eagles a 24-22 lead. However, Dubuque scored four straight points to win the second set 26-24. 
  • With score 8-6 in favor of Dubuque in the third set, the Spartans went on an 9-1 run to lead 17-8. The Eagles would cut their deficit to 20-19 after going on a 10-3 run; however that would be as close as the Eagles would get as the Spartans scored five of the final eight points to take the third set 25-22. 
  • UWL took an early 7-3 lead in the fourth set and eventually led 13-7. The Spartans would cut it to 15-14 but UWL quickly scored three straight points to lead 18-14. Dubuque would not get closer than two (22-20) the rest of the way.
  • Dubuque scored the first three points of the fifth set and extended their lead to 9-2. UWL would only score two more points the rest of the set as Dubuque took the decisive set 15-4. 

FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • As a team, the Eagles hit .126 and were led offensively by Gabby Johson with 16 kills.
  • Joining the Eagles offense in double figures in kills was Reese Yocum and Geiser who each had 14 kills while Grace Nommensen added 11.
  • Taylor Larson had career high 38 digs to lead the Eagles defense while Nommensen added 14. Jackie Oetterer finished with a match high 55 assists. 
  • Emma Powell led the Dubuque offense as she finished with 12 kills while Caitlin Jensen added 11.

  • UWL will return to Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) action on Friday, October 25 when they travel to UW-Platteville. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
