Derousseau Hits Game-Winner in Double Overtime Victory over UW-Stevens Point

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team earned its first Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) win of the season with a 86-84 double overtime victory over UW-Stevens Point Saturday night in Mitchell Hall. The Eagles improve to 7-6 overall and 1-1 in the WIAC while the Pointers drop to 7-6 overall and 1-1 in the league. 

The game featured 13 lead changes and 10 ties. 

UW-Stevens Point took a 18-13 lead with 12:41 remaining in the first half on a pair of Josiah Butler free throws. The Pointers took their largest lead of the first half at 37-27 with 2:35 left on a Myles Coleman layup. UW-Stevens Point led 39-30 with :16 remaining before UWL's Dustin Derousseau hit a three-pointer with :01 left to cut the halftime deficit to 39-33.

Back-to-back three-pointers by Will Fuhrmann to start the second half for UWL tied the game at 39-39. He connected on his third straight three-point field goal to give the Eagles a 44-41 advantage. UW-Stevens Point scored the game's next six points to take a 47-44 lead with 12:59 left on Malik Abdul-Wahid's layup. After Torin Hannah tied the game at 47-47 on a three-pointer, UW-Stevens Point went on a 10-0 run to take a 57-47 lead with 9:39 left. 

UWL responded with a 10-0 run of its own to force a 57-57 tie. Fuhrmann and Hannah each connected on three-pointers in the run. Jake Gross' jumper with 6:12 left tied the game. The Pointers used a 9-2 run to take a 66-59 lead with 3:18 left on Butler's layup. Four free throws by Derousseau cut the advantage to 66-63. Darrius Bolden's jumper with 1:20 left gave the Pointers a 68-63 lead. Hannah's layup with :39 remaining cut it to 68-65. After Seth Miron missed a jumper for UW-Stevens Point with :19 left, Derousseau forced overtime with a three-pointer with :04 remaining. 

The Eagles led by three points in the first overtime, including 75-72 with 2:02 left on a Derousseau three-pointer. Abdul-Wahid's free throw with 1:42 remaining and Bolden's jumper with :52 left tied the game at 75-75. UWL's JJ Paider converted a pair of free throws with :32 remaining to give the Eagles a two-point lead, but Bolden tied the game on a jumper with :19 left. Derousseau missed a potential game-winning jumper with :03 left. 

Hannah's three-pointer and Fuhrmann's jumper gave UWL a 82-77 lead in overtime and forcing a UW-Stevens Point timeout. Abdul-Wahid's three-pointer with 1:21 left cut the lead to 82-80. After a Gross layup with :56 remaining made it a four-point contest, Bolden connected on a three-point field goal with :46 left to cut the lead to 84-83. UWL missed on a jumper and Bolden was fouled with :23 remaining. He missed the first free throw, but converted the second to force a 84-84 tie. The Eagles called a timeout with :06 left and Derousseau hit the game-winning jumper with :01 remaining.

UWL shot 35.8% from the field Saturday, including 27.8% (10-of-36) from three-point range, and 78.3% (18-of-23) at the free throw line. Derousseau led the Eagles with 32 points, going 10-of-18 from the field, including two-of-six from three-point range, and 10-of-11 at the line. He added six rebounds and three assists. Fuhrmann totaled 19 points, nine rebounds, two assists and two steals, going five-of-11 from three-point range. Hannah recorded a double-double with 13 points and game-high 11 rebounds. He finished with three assist and three steals. 

It marks UWL's first double overtime game since a 83-81 win over Marian College (Ind.) on December 28, 2007.

UW-Stevens Point shot 43.2% from the field, including 35.0% (seven-of-20) from three-point range, and 68.4% (13-of-19) at the line. Abdul-Wahid led the Pointers with 19 points while Butler finished with 17 points and team-high 10 rebounds. Bolden totaled 16 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals. 

UWL returns to action Wednesday, January 10 hosting UW-Stout at 7 p.m.
