Volleyball Splits Pair of Non-Conference Matches; Falls to Millikin, Defeats Elmhurst

Whitewater, Wis.  - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team split a pair of non-conference matches as they fall to Millikin University (Ill.), but defeat Elmhurst University (Ill.) Saturday afternoon.

  • With the first set tied at 3, The Big Blue went on a 7-1 run to lead 10-4. The Eagles battled back to cut their deficit to 15-14 but the Big Blue would score 10 of the next 13 points to take the first set 25-17. 
  • Trailing 11-8 in the second set, UWL scored three unanswered to tie the set at 11. Millikin (Ill.) would take a 17-13 lead on back-to-back service aces and UWL would not get any closer than two (19-17) the rest of the set. 
  • Leading 6-5 in the third set, Millikin (Ill.) went on a 6-1 run to lead 12-6 and would extend their lead to 20-13. Trailing 24-14, UWL would score seven unanswered to pull within three (24-21) but that would be as close as the Eagles would get. 
  • Jackie Oetterer became the 14th player in program history to surpass the 1,000 assist mark.

  • Trailing 7-6 in the first set, UWL went on a 5-0 run to lead 11-6. Two kills by Brianne Korducki, a kill by Reese Yocum and a service ace from Taylor Larson sparked the run. The Bluejays would pull with in two (15-13) but the Eagles scored four straight to make it 19-15. After a Bluejays service ace made it 21-19, the Eagles scored four of the final five points to make it 25-20. 
  • Elmhurst (Ill.) jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the second set before UWL would take a 10-9 lead on a Korducki kill. A Grace Nommensen kill tied the game at 15 before Elmhurst (ILL.) scored six straight to take a 21-15 lead. Three kills by Kaity Coisman and two by Korducki tied the match at 23. The Bluejays took a 24-23 lead but the Eagles would get a kill by Korducki and one from Anna Rossner followed by a solo block by Nommensen to give UWL the 26-24 win.  
  • Again Elmhurst (Ill.) took an early 7-3 lead and eventually took a 17-10 lead in the third set. UWL would not get any closer than five (20-15) the rest of the set.
  • UWL had 14 kills and just two hitting errors in the fourth set as they hit .353 as a team. The Eagles took its largest lead of the set at 15-10 before the Bluejays battled back to take a 22-21 lead. An assisted block by Coisman and Nommensen followed by an Elmhurst (Ill.) hitting error gave UWL a 24-22 lead. After a UWL service error, Gabrialla Johnson recorded a kill to give the Eagles a 25-23 win in the fourth set.

  • Korducki led the Eagles with 23 kills and 13 digs in two matches. 
  • Rossner hit .529 with 11 kills and 2 errors in the win over Elmhurst (Ill.) while recording eight total blocks on the day.
  • Nommensen finished with six kills, 16 assists, 6 digs and 4 total blocks vs. Elmhurst (Ill.).
  • Oetterer finished the day with 34 assists 13 digs.
  • Addison Oyer led Millikin University (Ill.) with 11 kills.
  • Jada Wiley led Elmhurst University (Ill.) with 16 kills.

  • UWL will return to Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play on Friday, October 6 when they travel to UW-Stevens Point. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
