Second-Ranked Christopher Newport Gets Early Goal to Hold Off Twelve-Ranked UWL

Newport News, Va. - In a match-up of top-12 ranked teams, the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer squad fell, 1-0, at Christopher Newport University (Va.) Saturday afternoon at Jennings Stadium. The Eagles, ranked 12th on the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division III Poll, drop to 7-1 on the season while the Captains, ranked second in NCAA Division III, improve to 9-0. 

It was the second-ever meeting between the teams. Christopher Newport (Va.) earned a 2-1 victory over UWL in 2018.

The Captains scored the game's only goal at 6:27 from Sarah Smith. Hanna Heaton recorded the assist on a Christopher Newport (Va.) corner kick. 

UWL finished with four shots in the first half while Christopher Newport (Va.) totaled seven. Each team had a pair of corner kicks. 

The Eagles were held without a shot in the second half as the Captains totaled six. Both teams had one corner kick in the second half. 

Alexis McMahon had two shots for UWL with both coming on goal. Jenna Nichols had one shot on goal while Ainsley Allan recorded one shot. Christopher Newport (Va.) finished with 13 shots, including four on goal. Heaton had four shots for the Captains while Smith finished with three shots, including two on goal. 

Sophia Anger had three saves for UWL while Amy Sidaway also finished with three for Christopher Newport (Va.). 

UWL returns to action Sunday, September 24 facing Virginia Wesleyan University.  The game will be played at Captains Field at Christopher Newport (Va.) starting at 9:45 a.m.
