Volleyball FInishes Sugar Loaf Classic 2-0; Sweeps St. Scholastica and Lawrence

Winona, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team finished the opening weekend of the 2023 season by going 2-0 (4-0 for tournament) on day two of the Sugar Loaf Classic hosted by St. Mary's University (Minn.).

UWL defeated College of St. Scholastica (Minn.) 25-10, 25-17,25-19. UWL defeated Lawrence University (Wis.) 25-11, 25-9, 25-10

  • UWL scored the first five points and never trailed in set one. However St. Scholastica (Minn.) scored the next five to tie the game at 5 but UWL would take control from there. Gabrialla Johnson would serve 13 straight at one point which allowed the Eagles to take its largest lead of the first set at 23-6. Brianne Korducki has five kills in the opening set. 
  • With the score tied at eight, UWL went on a 5-0 run sparked by three straight kills to take a 13-8 lead. St. Scholastica cut their deficit to 20-16; however, UWL scored five of the next six points to take set two 25-17. After a Anna Rossner kill, Korducki ended the set with a service ace. 
  • The third set was all UWL as they scored six of the first seven points. Reese Yocum and Paige Geiser each recorded two kills to spark the early run. UWL extended its lead to 10-3 before St. Scholastica pulled with in 15-13. But that would be as close as they would get as the Eagles recorded four straight kills and a service ace.

  • The Eagles took a 4-1 lead on a Yocum kill before Lawrence scored twice to make it 4-3. UWL then scored 11 of the next 15 points to pull away in the opening set. Lawrence would not get any closer than seven the rest of the set. 
  • UWL started fast in the second set as they scored 11 of the first 13 points and never trailed. The Eagles recorded nine service aces in the second set including five by Ella Luoma
  • The third set saw UWL commit just one hitting error as a team and hit .556 with 16 kills including six different players recording a kill. 
FROM THE BOXSCORE
  • Korducki continued her hot start to the season as she recorded a double-double (14 kills, 15 digs) versus St. Scholastica and led the Eagles with 10 kills against Lawrence (Wis.). 
  • Jackie Oetterer led the Eagles with 18 kills in both matches. Taylor Larson finished with a team high 22 digs in the two matches. 
  • As a team, the Eagles finished with 22 service aces in the two matches including getting seven from Luoma.
  • All 17 players on the Eagles roster got into the action in the win over Lawrence (Wis.).
UP NEXT
  • UWL returns to action on Friday, September 8 when they travel to Minneapolis, MInn. to play in the Augsburg University (Minn.) Invite. The Eagles open the two day invite  playing Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) at 2:30 p.m.
