Volleyball Finishes UWL Invite 4-0; Defeats Bethany Lutheran and UM Morris

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 La Crosse, Wis.  - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team finished their home tournament with two more wins Saturday afternoon as they defeated Bethany Lutheran College (Minn.) and the University of Minnesota Morris. The wins extend the Eagles win streak to seven matches.

  • With the score tied at 4, UWL went on a 7-0 run to lead 11-4. The Vikings would not get any closer than four (20-16) as UWL led by as many as 10 (18-8). 
  •  UWL went on a 6-1 run in the second set to turn an 8-8 tie into a 14-9 lead. The Vikings would respond with a 6-0 run of their own to take a 15-14 lead. Leading 21-20, UWL got two kills from Reese Yocum, a kill from Anna Rossner and a Viking hitting error to close out the second set.
  • Set three saw the Eagles record just six kills and six hitting errors in 27 attempts as they struggled offensively. The Vikings hit .235 (13 kills, five errors) and led by as many as nine (16-7) in the third set.
  • UWL scored the first five points of the fourth set and never trailed. As a team, UWL had just eight kills but their defense allowed just five kills while forcing 11 hitting errors.

  • UWL started fast in the first set against Morris as they jumped out to an 8-3 run. Rossner led the fast start as she recorded two kills and two service aces in the first eight points. After UWL led 13-7, the Cougars cut their deficit to 17-16. However, UWL scored five straight to lead 22-16 and would not look back. Nommensen recorded a kill and two service aces while Yocum had two kills to spark the mini run. 
  • UWL once again built an early lead in the second set as they led 11-3. UWL would extend the lead to take its largest at 19-7 . 
  • As a team, UWL hit .314 with 15 kills and four errors in the third set. Two more service aces from Nommensen and three kills by Gabrialla Johnson helped the Eagles start fast in the third set as they scored nine of the first 12 points.

  • Nommensen was named to the All-Tournament Team as she finished with 33 assists, 16 kills,  8 service aces, and 13 digs in the two matches today.
  •  Korducki had 13 kills and 17 digs in the win over Bethany Lutheran for her tenth double-double of the season.
  • Ella Luoma finished with 24 digs and four service aces over the two matches.
  • Katelyn Maag, Riley Sammon and Lexiss Trygg each had nine kills for Bethany Lutheran College (Minn.).
  • Maggie Jones led Minnesota Morris with nine kills.

  • UWL will open Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play on Wednesday, September 20 when they host UW-Platteville at 7 p.m.
