Three Goals in Second Half Spurt Leads to Win at Wheaton

Wheaton, Ill. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team, ranked 13th on this week's United Soccer Coaches Poll, improved to 6-0 on the season with a 3-1 victory at Wheaton College (Ill.) Saturday night at Joe Bean Stadium. The Thunder drop to 0-4-2 on the year. 

The 6-0 record is UWL's best start since winning its first seven games in 1999. 

The game was scoreless at halftime after UWL totaled 13 shots and Wheaton (Ill.) four in the first 45 minutes. 

UWL scored three goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Ainsley Allan scored the game-winning goal at 49:28 to make it 1-0.  The Eagles made it 2-0 at 54:20 on own goal from the Thunder and Claire Cater extended the lead to 3-0 at 54:58. 

Wheaton (Ill.) cut the deficit to 3-1 at 75:00 with a goal from Grace Crowder assisted by Audrey Sexson.

UWL finished with 27 shots in the game, including 16 on goal. Maggie Hernandez led the Eagles with four shots with one on goal. Alexis McMahon and Ellie Arndt each had three shots with one on goal while Allan and Cater each had two shots with both coming on goal. UWL had seven corner kicks with five in the second half. 

Wheaton (Ill.) was held to eight shots with five on goal. Crowder finished with two shots, both coming on goal. The Thunder recorded four corner kicks. 

Sophia Anger earned the win in goal for UWL, registering four saves. Myah Schoolman had 13 saves for Wheaton (Ill.).

UWL returns to action Wednesday, September 20 hosting Wartburg College (Iowa) at 6 p.m.
