Northfield, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's cross country team opened its 2023 season winning the Carleton College (Minn.) Running of the Cows Saturday at Bill Huyck Championship Course. The Eagles finished with 36 team points. Carleton (Minn.) was second with 75, Minnesota State University Mankato third with 84, Saint John's University (Minn.) fourth with 129 and Macalester College (Minn.) fifth with 164. A total of 15 teams competed.
UWL, ranked fourth on the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Top-30 Poll, had 12 of the top-19 finishers in Saturday's race, including eight in the top-13.
Elias Ritzke led UWL with a fifth-place finish, running the 8,000-meter course in 25:15.60. The Eagles'
Ethan Gregg was sixth (25:15.80), Joey Sullivan seventh (25:25.50),
Zach Slevin eighth (25:29.10) and
Will Aurit 10th (25:34.00).
Isaac Wagner placed 11th (25:34.30) with
Aidan Matthai 12th (25:34.40),
Alex Strojny 13th (25:35.00),
Ben Stangel 15th (25:40.50),
Jayden Zywicki 16th (25:41.60),
Parker Huhn 17th (25:43.00) and
Reed Anderson 19th (25:47.50).

UWL returns to action Friday, September 29 at the UW-Eau Claire Blugold Invitational at 4:15 p.m. at Whitetail Golf Course in Colfax.
