Oshkosh, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team split its Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader at UW-Oshkosh Saturday afternoon at Tidemann Field at Alumni Stadium. The Titans, ranked 16th on D3baseball.com, took the opener, 9-2, before the Eagles, ranked 18th on D3baseball.com, won the nightcap, 13-2 in seven innings.
Both teams are now 24-8 overall and 15-5 in the WIAC and tied for first first in the league standings. The teams also split its doubleheader on Friday with UWL taking the opener, 8-2, and the UW-Oshkosh winning the second game, 13-3 in eight innings.
Ty Hamilton had three hits in Saturday's doubleheader.
The Titans took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first in Saturday's opener on Matt Scherrman's home run. UW-Oshkosh extended its lead to 3-0 in the fifth on Mason Kirchberg's home run to lead off the inning and Connor Giusti later scored an unearned run on Jake Surane's RBI single.
The Titans scored five times in the sixth to take a 8-0 advantage. Scherman doubled to start the inning followed by a Zach Taylor infield single. Nicholas Shiu's single scored Schermann to make it 4-0. After both runners advanced oon a wild pitch, Kirchberg delivered a two-run double for a 6-0 lead. Giusti followed with a two-run home run. Taylor's solo home run in the seventh gave UW-Oshkosh a 9-0 lead.
UWL scored its two runs in the eighth.
Jack Moran doubled to start the inning and
Logan Pye was hit-by-pitch.
Jack Olver then singled to score Moran with Pye moving to third. After a pair of outs were recorded,
Ty Hamilton singled to knock in Pye to cut the lead to 9-2.
Tyler Schmitt (4-2) took the loss for UWL, going 6.0 innings, allowing nine hits and eight runs (seven earned) while striking out three. The Eagles had seven hits in the opener with
Mac Born going 2-for-4.
LJ Waco (6-0) picked up the victory, pitching 7.0 innings for UW-Oshkosh. He allowed three hits and two walks with nine strikeouts. The Titans finished with 10 hits as Schermann went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Taylor and Kirchberg both finished 2-for-4 with two runs each. Kirchberg had three RBI. Giusti scored twice and had a pair of RBI.
Owen Deprez earned the win in Saturday's nightcap.
UWL scored three runs in the top of the first in the nightcap. Moran singled to lead-off the game and went to second on Pye's bunt. Olver singled with two outs to move Moran to third and
Anthony Vivian followed with a double scoring Moran and Olver for a 2-0 lead. Hamilton's single then scored Vivian with the third run of the inning.
UW-Oshkosh got one run back in the bottom of the first when Surane scored on Scherrman's single. The Titans had the bases-loaded with no outs, but failed to score any more runs in the inning.
The Eagles responded in the top of the second as Born hit a grand slam to score
Eli Roberts, Moran and Pye to make it 7-1. UWL tallied six runs in the top of the fifth. Roberts' two-run single scored Hamilton and
Ben LaRonge to extend the lead to 9-1. George Seamen scored on Moran's groundout and Roberts came in on a Pye single for a 11-1 lead. Born then followed with his second home run of the game to score Pye to make it 13-1.
Scherrman scored on a Kirchberg single in the bottom of the sixth for UW-Oshkosh to finish the scoring.
Owen Deprez (5-1) earned the victory, pitching 6.0 innings, allowing eight hits, two runs and one walk with five strikeouts. UWL totaled 13 hits with Born going 3-for-5 with two home runs and six RBI. Moran finished 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. Roberts went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI and Hamilton finished 2-for-3 with a run and RBI. Pye scored twice.
Cameron Mulvihill (5-2) suffered the loss, going 3.1 innings, allowing eight hits, seven runs and one walk with four strikeouts. The Titans finished with eight hits as Surane, Scherrman and Ethan Schreier each had two.
UWL returns to action Tuesday, May 2 at Luther College (Iowa) for one nine-inning game at 4 p.m.
