Decorah, Iowa - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team, ranked 16th on this week's D3baseball.com Top-25 Poll, improved to 25-8 on the season with a 12-3 win at Luther College (Iowa) Tuesday afternoon. The Norse drop to 21-16 on the season.
UWL scored four runs in the top of the second.
Jack Olver lead-off with a single and went to third on
Ty Hamilton's single a Luther (Iowa) throwing error.
Tim Urlaub's RBI groundout scored Olver with the first run of the game.
George Seaman walked and
Eli Roberts singled to load the bases.
Jack Moran's single scored Hamilton to make it 2-0 and after a foul out,
Mac Born delivered a two-run single to extend the lead to 4-0 with Seaman and Roberts scoring.
Sawyer Phillips earned the win on Tuesday.
Luther (Iowa) scored its first run in the bottom of the fourth on Joshua Matanich's home run. The Norse cut the lead to 4-3 in the sixth. Noah Sebben's two-out two-run triple cut the deficit to one.
UWL scored eight runs over the final two innings. The Eagles tallied five runs in the eighth to take a 9-3 lead. Seaman led-off with a double followed by walks to Roberts and Moran. Seaman scored as
Logan Pye reached on a Norse' error to make it 5-3. Born followed with a grand slam scoring Roberts, Moran and Pye. It was Born's second grand slam in as many games after hitting one in UWL's victory at UW-Oshkosh in the second game of the doubleheader on April 29.
UWL added three runs in the ninth.
Ben LaRonge had a pinch-hit double to start the inning and came in on Seaman's two-run home run.
Chris VandenHeuvel had a pinch-hit single and later scored on a
Jordan Williams' sacrifice fly to finish the scoring.
Sawyer Phillips (2-0) earned the win for UWL, pitching 5.1 innings, allowing three hits and two runs while striking out four.
Mitchel Fassbender went 1.2 innings, allowing two hits and one run while
Tucker Bouche and
Ben Byom each pitched 1.0 inning, allowing no hits or runs. Byom allowed one walk with one strikeout.
George Seaman went 2-for-2 with three runs.
UWL totaled 15 hits in Tuesday's win. Born went 3-for-5 with six RBI while Seaman finished 2-for-2 with two RBI, two walks and three runs. Moran, Vivian and Hamilton each had two hits. Roberts scored twice.
Born set a pair of career records on Tuesday, becoming UWL's all-time leader in home runs (28) and RBI (157). He broke
Chester Janke's (2001-04) school record of 27 career home runs and
Taylor Kohlwey's (2013-16) record of 154 RBI.
Charles Running (0-1) took the loss for Luther (Iowa), going 1.0 inning, allowing five hits, four runs and one walk.
The Norse finished with five hits in the game with Sebben going 2-for-4 with two RBI.
UWL returns to action Friday, May 5 hosting UW-Eau Claire in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader at 1 p.m.
