Platteville, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team split its Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader at UW-Platteville Friday afternoon. The Eagles took the opener, 3-1, before the Pioneers came back to win the nightcap, 2-1. UWL is now 16-11 overall and 1-3 in the WIAC while UW-Platteville is 15-9 overall and 1-3 in the league.
In the opener,
Elise Weinzierl (7-6) earned the complete-game victory. She went 7.0 innings, allowing five hits and no earned runs while striking out two.
The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second.
Marissa Pease singled to start the inning and advanced to second on
Anna Jensen's sacrifice bunt.
Madi O'Brien followed with an RBI double to score Pease with the game's first run.
Marissa Pease had four hits on Friday.
UWL extended its lead with two runs in the top of the seventh.
Jordyn McCormack walk to lead-off the inning and went to second a Pease bunt single.
Joette Kassa replaced Pease as a pinch runner. Jensen reached on an error to load the bases. O'Brien's single scored McCormack for a 2-0 lead. After a pitching change and fly out,
Jordan Schultz singled to knock in Kassa to make it 3-0.
UW-Plattevile stranded a pair of runners in the fourth and sixth innings before getting on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh. Calli Storms' RBI groundout scored Lauren Salerno with an unearned run to cut the lead to 3-1.
UWL totaled six hits in the opener with Pease going 2-for-3 with one run while O'Brien finished 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Claire Bakkestuen (6-4) took the loss for UW-Platteville, pitching 6.0 innings, allowing five hits, three runs and one walk with three strikeouts. Five different players recorded a hit for the Pioneers.
The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first in the nightcap. McCormack tripled with two outs and scored on Pease' single.
UW-Platteville tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on a Alexandria Davis single knocking in Greta Volkening. In the bottom of the seventh, Danielle Trumbo singled with one out and was replaced by pinch-runner Kendall Drake. Storms walked to put runners on first and second. After Weinzierl replaced starter
Remington Stark, Payton Marvin delivered a game-winning double to score Drake.
Stark (2-1) suffered the loss for UWL, pitching 6.1 innings, allowing five hits, two runs and two walks with striking out six. The Eagles had eight hits with
Abbey Bosch and Schultz each gong 2-for-3 while Pease went 2-for-2 with an RBI and walk.
Taylor Roughen (8-3) picked up the win for UW-Platteville, going 7.0 innings, allowing eight hits, one run and one walk while striking out two. Six different players had a hit.
UWL returns to action Saturday, April 22 hosting UW-Stout at 2 p.m.
