Lacrosse Rallies for Overtime Victory over Carthage; Extends Winning Streak to Six

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse lacrosse team extended its winning streak to six with a 12-11 overtime victory over Carthage College (Wis.) Saturday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex. The Eagles improve to 7-2 on the season while the Firebirds drop to 7-4. 

UWL, now 5-0 at home, took a 1-0 lead with 13:57 left in the opening quarter on Ava Schiltz goal off a free position shot. Carthage (Wis.) tied the game, 1-1, with 10:41 remaining on Maddie Berni's goal. The Eagles took a 3-1 lead with goals from Lauren Schwartz (9:56) and Abigail Steigauf (7:44). Schiltz recorded an assist on the Schwartz' goal. The Firebirds scored three consecutive goals to take a 4-3 lead. Kyleigh Higgins made it 3-2 with 4:46 remaining and Berni's goal with 3:24 left tied the game. Elizabeth Oda gave Carthage (Wis.) a 4-3 lead with 1:05 remaining.

The Eagles scored the game's only three goals in the second quarter. Megan Maloney tied the game, 4-4, with 10:32 remaining. Schiltz then scored a pair of goals to give UWL a 6-4 halftime advantage. She scored with 5:30 left and with :03 remaining. 

Rachel Harris scored with 11:54 left in the third quarter to cut the lead to 6-5 and Oda's goal off a Rachel Harris assist with 2:32 remaining tied the game, 6-6. Kiersten Pelletier gave UWL a 7-6 lead with 1:20 left. 

After Schwartz gave UWL a 8-6 lead with 13:11 remaining, Carthage (Wis.) took a 10-8 lead with four consecutive goals. Harris scored with 10:48 left to cut the lead to 10-9 and Oda scored with 9:04 remaining to force a 10-10 tie. Berni gave the Firebirds an 11-10 lead with 8:14 left and Piper Lefevre made it 12-10 with 4:54 remaining. Steigauf (4:36) and Schiltz (4:06) tied the game with free position goals. Berni then gave Carthage (Wis.) a 11-10 lead with 2:37 remaining on a free position shot. Schiltz tied the game to force overtime with :26 left. She then scored the game-winning goal :48 in overtime. 

UWL finished with 39 shots in the victory, including 10 from Schiltz and Schwartz. Schiltz totaled six goals while Schwartz and Steigauf each had two. Abigale Furlano earned the win, recording 12 saves. 

Carthage (Wis.) totaled 38 shots with Berni finishing with 12 and Harris nine. Berni had four goals, Oda three and Harris two. Alessandra Almendarez suffered the loss for the Firebirds, finishing with 17 saves.
