Strong Pitching Leads Baseball to Doubleheader Sweep Over UW-Stout

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team defeated UW-Stout, 9-1 and 5-2, Sunday afternoon at Copeland Park. The wins improve the Eagles to 9-3 overall and 3-1 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) action while the Blue Devils fall to 8-4 overall and 1-3 in conference play. UWL takes the season series 3-1 after splitting Saturday's doubleheader.

In the first game, UWL scored one run in both the first and second inning to take an early 2-0 lead. Jack Moran led off the first with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Then with one out, Mac Born doubled to right field to score Moran. In the second inning, Logan Pye singled and advanced to second on a single by Jordan Williams. Moran reached on a bunt single to load the bases. Jack Olver drove in Pye when he reached on a fielder's choice. UWL would take a 4-0 lead in the third inning on an RBI single by George Seaman and an RBI double by Pye. 

UW-Stout scored a run in the fifth as Riley Boushack hit an RBI double. Seaman would give UWL a 5-1 lead with his third home run of the season in the bottom of the fifth. The Eagles scored two more runs in both the seventh and eighth innings to make it 9-1. In the seventh, Williams drove in a run with a single while Moran scored a run with a sacrifice bunt. After Born walked and advanced to second on a balk in the eighth inning, Seaman recorded his third RBI of the game with a single to score Born. Pye hit his third double of the game to score Seaman for the final run of the game. 

Offensively, the Eagles recorded 15 hits and had seven of their nine batters record a hit. Pye led the Eagles going 5-for-5 with three doubles, two RBI and two runs. Also recording multi-hit games for the Eagles were Seaman (3-for-5), Moran (2-for-4) and Williams (2-for-5). Seaman also recorded three RBI and two runs while Moran, Olver, Born, and Williams each drove in one run.

Owen Deprez (2-0) got the win on the mound for the Eagles by going 7.0 innings and allowing one run on six hits and three walks while striking out nine. Tucker Bouche pitched the final 2.0 innings, striking out three and not allowing a batter to reach base. 

Trevor Miller (1-1) suffered the loss for the Blue Devils as he gave up four runs on nine hits and one walk in 2.0 innings of work. UW-Stout was led offensively by Boushack who was 2-for-3 with an RBI. 

In game two, the Eagles scored first getting two runs on two hits and an error in the second inning. With two outs, Born singled, advanced to second when Olver reached via a hit-by-pitch and loaded the bases when Ben LaRonge walked. Williams then singled to center to score both Born and Olver. The Blue Devils would tie the game in the third inning on a two-run single by Parker Hagebock. UWL quickly took the lead back in the bottom of the third inning when Pye led off with his first home run of the season to give UWL the 3-2 lead. 

The game would remain 3-2 until the bottom of the eighth inning when UWL scored two insurance runs. Ty Hamilton led off the inning with a single and moved up to second on a single by Anthony Vivian. Born was intentionally walked to load the bases. Olver followed with a walk of his own to score Hamilton. UW-Stout was later called for a balk which caused Vivian to score the final run of the game and put UWL up 5-2. 

UWL got another solid pitching performance as Tyler Schmitt (2-0) allowed just two runs on three hits and four walks while striking out three in 7.0 innings. Caleb Matl pitched the final 2.0 innings to earn the save as he struck out three and did not give up a hit.

Born led the UWL offensive attack in game two as he was 3-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. Williams finished 1-for-4 with two RBI while Pye was 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. 

Drew Buss (1-1) suffered the loss for the Blue Devils as he gave up three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out six in 7.0 innings of work. UW-Stout, which finished with three hits, was led offensively by Hagebock who was 1-for-4 with two RBI. 

UWL will return to action on Wednesday afternoon when it travels to Winona, Minnesota to play a non-conference doubleheader against St. Mary's University. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
