Fast Start Leads Lacrosse to Home Win over Northwestern

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse lacrosse team improved to 3-2 on the season with a 12-5 victory over the University of Northwestern (Minn.) Wednesday night at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex. Northwestern (Minn.) drops to 3-2 on the year.

UWL raced out to a fast start, taking a 6-0 halftime lead. Lauren Schwartz notched the first goal at 7:51 to get the scoring going. Ava Schiltz (6:41) and Olivia Gscheidmeier (4:26) gave UWL a 3-0 lead with assists from Megan Maloney and Kiersten Pelletier. Schwartz notched her second goal with :47 left to make it 4-0 after the first quarter. 

Oliva Wight's goal with 8:22 remaining in the second quarter on a Grace Willmott assist made it 5-0 and Gscheidmeier extended the lead to 6-0 with 2:55 left on a MacKenzie Crouse assist. 

UWL took a 7-0 lead with Maloney scoring with 14:38 remaining in the third quarter. Northwestern (Minn.) got on the board with 13:53 left on a Grace Teal goal. Willmott (10:18) and Britta Nelson (7:32) gave UWL a 9-1 advantage.  

Schwartz tallied her third goal of the game with 4:44 left in the third quarter to make it 10-1 and Schiltz scored with 3:36 remaining to give UWL an 11-1 advantage. Northwestern (Minn.) scored the game's next four goals, including a pair from Ava Whitcomb. Cara Smith and Samantha Wiebold also notched goals for the Eagles. 

UWL finished the scoring on a goal from Schwartz, her fourth of the game, with 2:42 remaining.

The Eagles tallied 32 shots in the game with Schwartz scoring four goals while Schiltz and Gscheidmeier each finishing with two. Emily Hageman earned the win, recording five saves.

Northwestern (Minn.) finished with 20 shots. Whitcomb led the Eagles with two goals. Daisy Koffler finished with nine saves.

UWL returns to action Saturday, March 25 hosting Cornell College (Iowa) at 1 p.m.
