UWL Picks Up Road Win over UW-Platteville; Five Players In Double Figures

Will Fuhrmann scored a career-high 20 points in win over UW-Platteville.
Box Score Platteville, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team won its 11th straight road game as it defeated UW-Platteville, 82-67, Wednesday night at Bo Ryan Court in Williams Fieldhouse. The Eagles, who are receiving votes on this week's D3hoops.com Top-25 poll, improve to 16-5 overall and 7-3 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). The Pioneers fall to 12-9 overall and 5-5 in WIAC play.

Will Fuhrmann hit a three-pointer followed by a jumper from Austin Westra to give the Eagles an early 5-2 lead. After UWL took a 9-7 lead, the Pioneers scored eight straight (15-9) to force an Eagles' timeout with 12:35 left in the opening period. The Eagles responded with a run of their own as they scored seven straight including a three-pointer by Jake Gross to lead 16-15 (9:13). A Brady Olson three-pointer gave the Pioneers a 19-16 lead with 8:57 left; however, the Eagles went on a 21-2 run to take their largest lead of the first half at 37-21 with 2:20 left. The Eagles led, 39-28, at halftime. 

In the first half, the UWL shot 13-of-26 (50.0%) from the floor, including six-of-12 (50%) from the three-point line. UWL was also seven-of-seven from the free throw line. Gross led the Eagles with 10 points while Fuhrmann added eight. 

UW-Platteville was 10-of-29 (34.5%) from the floor, including four-of-16 (25.0%) from behind the three-point line. Olson led the Pioneers with 12 points while Logan Pearson added nine. 

The Eagles scored the first four points of the second half to lead 43-28. The Pioneers would cut their deficit to 44-33 on a three-pointer by Pearson. UWL then went on a 11-5 run to lead 55-38 with 14:48 left. Fuhrmann sparked the run with two three-pointers. UW-Platteville scored 13 of the next 17 points to cut the deficit to 59-51 with 11:40 remaining. Back-to-back lay-ups from Fuhrmann and Ethan Anderson gave UWL a 63-51 lead before UW-Platteville pulled within seven (63-56) with 9:26 left. However, that would be as close as the Pioneers would get the rest of the way.

For the game, the UWL finished 29-of-54 (53.7%) from the floor, including nine-of-20 (45.0%) from the three-point line. UWL was 15-of-16 (93.8%) at the line. The Eagles finished with five players in double figures led by a career-high 20 points from Fuhrmann. Westra added 19 points while Gross finished with a career-high 13 points. Also in double figures for the UWL was Craig Steele with 11 points and Dustin Derousseau with a career-high 11. Westra and Derousseau each finished with a team-high six rebounds to help give the Eagles a 40-27 advantage on the boards. 

UW-Platteville finished shooting 25-of-61 (41.0%) from the floor, including 11-of-34 (42.4%) from the three-point line. The Pioneers were six-of-12 (50%) at the free throw line. Pearson led the Pioneers with 27 points while Olson added 18. Carter Lancaster grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. 

UWL will return to action on Saturday, February 4 hosting UW-Stevens Point at 5 p.m.
