Women's Tennis Finishes Third at WIAC Championships

Madison, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's tennis team placed third at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championship (presented by Culver's) Sunday afternoon at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium. The Eagles finished with 15 team points while UW-Whitewater won the conference crown with 21 and UW-Eau Claire placed second with 18.

THE BASICS
  • Location: Nielson Tennis Center, Madison, Wis. 
  • Team Results: UW-Whitewater 21, UW-Eau Claire 18, UW-La Crosse 15, UW-Oshkosh 12, UW-Stevens Point 9, UW-River Falls 5, UW-Stout 4.
  • What was at stake: UW-Whitewater, UW-Eau Claire, UW-La Crosse and UW-Oshkosh advance to a team tournament that will determine the conference's automatic qualifier to the National Collegiate Athletic Conference Division III Championships May 20-28 at Dwight Davis Memorial Tennis Center in St. Louis, MO. The team tournament will be held at the site of the overall conference champion on April 27, 2024.
WHAT HAPPENED
    Doubles Competition
  • At No. 1 doubles, Shelby Roth and Hannah Cady fell to Gracie Ha and Cassie Lee of UW-Whitewater 8-2 in the championship match. 
  • At No. 2 doubles, Tasha Bailey and Lauren Lindow lost to Kellie Ha and Molly Asfeld from UW-Whitewater 8-6 to finish second at the championships. 
  • Then at No. 3 doubles, Maia Samuelson and Izabelle Brinkman defeated Chloe Struss and Tegan McFarland of UW-River Falls 8-0 in the fifth place match. 
    Singles Competition
  • At No. 1 singles,Tasha Bailey advanced to the championship match by defeating Clare Palen of UW-Eau Claire 3-6, 6-3 (12-10). Then in the finals, Bailey lost to Cassie Lee of UW-Whitewater 6-2, 6-2.  
  • At No. 2 singles, Lauren Lindow lost to Samantha Fuchs of UW-Eau Claire 6-0, 6-2 to drop into the third place match. Lindow then defeated Quinlyn Mack of UW-Stevens Point 6-1, 6-0. 
  • Like Lindow, Shelby Roth lost in her semifinal match to Kellie Ha of UW-Whitewater 6-0, 6-4 at No. 3 singles. Roth bounced back in her third place match by defeating Ella Nguyen of UW-Oshkosh 6-2, 6-1. 
  • Hannah Cady defeated Sydney Presler of UW-Eau Claire 6-3, 3-6 (10-7) in the semifinals of No. 4 singles. Then in the finals, Cady fell 6-2, 6-3 to Molly Asfeld of UW-Whitewater. 
  • At No. 5 singles, Kate Townsend dropped her semifinal match falling 6-3, 6-0 to Alex Repplier of UW-Whitewater. In the third place match, Townsend defeated Kayla Gibbs of UW-Oshkosh 6-2, 6-2. 
  • Finally at No.6 singles, Emma Heinert defeated Morgan Dekan of UW-Eau Claire 6-0, 6-1. Then in the championship match, Heinert lost to MacKenzie Lindow of UW-Whitewater 4-6, 7-5 (10-2).
